How many of us left?
In the past 12 hours found out two more long term expats I know are on the way out. Speaking to a friend at a moving company, he says May has been his busiest month ever with move outs.
This is not K440 specific (although there was a good post months back showing that not many are here in country), but seems as a whole. I don't think it's purely based on the economy here, as I've seen people leaving that aren't doing it for jobs.
So what gives, and will all of these people return within a year when covid travel is a lot easier?

My circle of expat friends here is now a dot. Half a dozen individuals / families have left for a variety of reasons.
Will need to get out there and make some new friends when things ease, really can’t be arsed with that!

This phenomenon is occurring throughout Asia. To me, it's pretty obvious why - few are happy with only seeing their extended families once every 3 years, and the vaccine rollout in the region is tardy, which indicates that opening up is still a while away. It's hard to watch the US throwing away its masks when you're here experiencing the yoyo-ing of restrictions that seems to be occurring in this part of the world, and the lack of regional travel also plays a part.
Seems pretty relaxed right now, had a Whopper meal at the BK in Aeon Mall for the first time in months, it felt good, and no stress from anyone in uniform. They really want the business back.
Apparently.....It is all very secret squirell when the long termers move out finally. Some of the best known have left the building.
My take on all this is that covid will be replaced by the next virus and so on. Things will never be the same and it has been and will be catastrophic for countries like Cambodia etc that rely on tourism as an economic mainstay.

Rated R for Ricecakes

I sure want to go back to see my little Princess who I haven't seen for 18 months. But, apart from everything else, job prospects in Cambodia are dire and likely will remain so for years to come.

Not so sure about the 'secret' part ricecakes, more likely many didn't feel their departure needed headlines or big going away parties. Maybe some were not strongly committed to leaving 'for good', but felt they would still be 'in and out', but just more 'out'.
About the next virus, sure. It is a certainty. But that doesn't mean it will be soon. Probably (?) like you, I think it isn't anything like waiting for the statistically sure giant asteroid strike, or half of California leaping into the sea in 'The Big One'. The next big virus is more like climate change related disasters: more probable, more quickly. And like that also because human actions are important. in the virus case, increasing interaction with potential zoonotic virus hosts (more people and less isolated space for animals hosing currently non-human viruses). But, it might be a decade or more before the next pandemic, and, not to minimize Covid-19, it may be no more dangerous than this and, with luck the world will handle it much better.
Global tourism might be quite different in 2023, but I'm not sure it will be much worse for Cambodia.
You and your family, as seen through K440, seem very happy in Australia. I don't know you at all, but it doesn't seem Covid had anything to do with your departure. People have always come and gone. This IS a watershed moment, but new expats will return to Asia. For Cambodia, is it expats 3.0 that will be coming in?

How ever long Migs has been around for is irrelevant, he's talking about the people he knows who are long-term expats. Not many of my friends have gone that I can think of. Just 1 really.

IMHO this trend isn’t only due to the Covid crisis, other factors may include the ongoing country’s shift toward Asia (not to name the elephant in the room) that slowly makes westerners less relevant.
I wonder if the 47y statistical life expectancy average plays any role in the demise or worried departure of “some of us” tho

Not really, could always get my beer, law enforcement has always been kind and courteous, no over tattooed trouble maker types around. Internet and power has been mostly uninterrupted.Casino wrote: ↑Wed May 26, 2021 9:40 amCambodia sucks now! Pure and simple.
Never left, no plan to either.
