Is Kampot the new Sihanoukville?
An old acquaintance who grew up in Kampot told me that in the early 70's (I forget the exact time, but I think early '74) when the KR took the Bokor Casino village they lit some buildings on fire. She said the fire illuminated the clouds of smoke from below and the deep red glow was easily visible from Kampot city.
She had already travelled some through Europe as a female Khmer member of the National Skydiving team. She was a trim, small 60 year old when I met her in '94. She'd probably be happy about the new building.

Base jumpers are not skydivers in any way shape or form.Guest9999 wrote: ↑Sat May 29, 2021 9:42 pmAn old acquaintance who grew up in Kampot told me that in the early 70's (I forget the exact time, but I think early '74) when the KR took the Bokor Casino village they lit some buildings on fire. pew, pew, pew, pew!
Indeed, but I think, in the early 70's, it was a sky diving team that she leapt out of aircraft with. That said, I was both delighted and surprised to learn her story. I don't think it would have seemed more amazing to hear she was a base jumper. However, I could see how that might have left you considerably more impressed.
Perhaps we are just different that way?

Kep is more like a "new Sihanoukville". There's two of these under construction. Kampot has only one. Here's the other one in Kep:
Other one is located at the hill.

Not impressed. Base jumpers are generally “look at me” influencer type wankers.Guest9999 wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 12:53 amIndeed, but I think, in the early 70's, it was a sky diving team that she leapt out of aircraft with. One story of a base jumper who decided to break into the not yet finished Shard in Londonium and jump off the top but got tangled up and was left dangling like a trapped wet fish.
My mate, who had finished early to go see his sick grandson, had to go up and rescue him with the local fire crew. The guy got all angry for some reason until a fireman slapped him around the head then he became all emotional and kept crying.
I hate base jumpers.
Skydivers. Cool.
Base jumpers. Not cool.

Chhlong is great. We rented out Le Relais de Chhlong back in January and had a fabulous weekend. It's an easy and quick drive there as well - two hours to Kompong Cham, and then a hour further to Chhlong. I recommend taking the river road from K Cham.horace wrote: ↑Sat May 29, 2021 11:59 amOn the banks of the Mekong north of of Kompong Cham.

I cycled that river road 6 years ago great views but it was very muddy. Is it paved now? I reckon once I get climatized I shall do a three month cycle tour of Cambodia.Miguelito wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 1:45 pmChhlong is great. I saw they were doing some great deals in the past few quarters. I always wondered how that place could survive. Outside of river cruises I don't think many people have ever gone through the place. I haven't even been there since 2005, the road through the tobacco plantation north of Kampong Cham was very muddy then and the road from Chhlong to Kratie was really messy. Large patches were underwater so it was only possible by canoe. Trying to balance a dirt bike in a canoe while you cruise past the tops of submerged palm trees is sketchy.Miguelito wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 1:45 pmChhlong is great. Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
The mistake is the foundation is too small. If foundation small, building small.Bong Burgundy wrote: ↑Fri May 28, 2021 6:28 pmLooks like the construction of big useless things has come to Kampot. What are they building?

How big do you want it? It's already dwarfing everything else in the neighborhood.

and notice the one over the river...
btw the one in the above pic has a very big and deep foundation ..which was tested a while back by loading massive concrete weights on to it ...no idea of tonnage.... I guess it passed the test as some months later it started to come up out of the ground...it new floors being build..

Went to Chlong a few years ago. About 25 ks south of Kratie. Old logging port. Lovely decaying buildings. And a magnificent French owned hotel in an old villa with a modern extension in the same colonial style. Probably the nicest hotel in Cambodia. On the river bank of course. But nothing of interest in the area. Even more boring than Kampot.

I'm hearing reports of aggressive behavior all over Kampot. Not just from Khmers stealing bags from Western women, but also from aggressive behavior from Westerners.
