Local brews. What are you drinking?
Anchor is far too sweet tasting ..tastes awful to me these days.
Cambodia or Angkor fine prefer either by draft instead of a can Ganzberg has improved since it first came out but still to close to Anchor
Sometimes a shortage of Draft in Kampot these days apparently low production is the reason..they are not selling as much so not making as much....makes sense....

All 4 beers taste vastly different.
Like the others, I drink Cambodia, will not touch ganzberg.
Anchor then Angkor. will drink if there is no Cambodia.
Plenty of decent craft beer in town who must be struggling right now

I noticed that Anchor now had rice as an ingredient. I am sure that never used to the case! I also remember about ten years ago when Anchor production slowed down for some reason and 50% of it was imported from Singapore, it clearly stated where it was produced on the can. I used to send bar owners nuts by refusing to drink the imported stuff as it tasted quite different , something to do with the water I believe.
k440, something to do when you're pissed.

Beer Laos is my go to "local" bottle.
A few bars are serving their entire range ("Standard", Gold, Dark, White, IPA)and I've seen the standard in 600ml bottles in at least one.
As for craft beer vendors struggling - everytime I've been to a bar selling locally brewed craft beers they have a strong young (male and female) crowd who aren't on a budget. Those are the bars that will survive. Not those targeting targeting 50c crowd.
Times have changed.

I've seen Saigon Green in cans occasionally but it doesn't taste the same as the larger bottles. They sometimes have 333 at Vinamart on Monivong.
Spotted this one day
A while back they were importing Anchor from China and it wasn't as good as the local brew. I think they use rice in the recipe now, not sure if that was always the case. Anchor have launched a new version @ 4.5% abv.
I prefer Beer Lao but am flexible for Picon biere

I remember that, my Khmer friends used to get excited when they saw the Singaporean cans - they thought that they were being all refined and exotic by drinking beer from Singapore. I think it was often a little bit more expensive too.horace wrote: ↑Thu Jun 24, 2021 9:18 amI noticed that Anchor now had rice as an ingredient. I am sure that never used to the case! That's my recollection, and I did see some cases from China. They are very coy about country of origin. Often the only clue is in the website address.horace wrote: ↑Thu Jun 24, 2021 9:18 amI noticed that Anchor now had rice as an ingredient. I am sure that never used to the case! That's what used to be called home brew. Mostly horrible, bitter tasting crap for people who like to drink 2 beers in an evening.ReasonstobefearfulP3 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 24, 2021 8:11 amPlenty of decent craft beer in town who must be struggling right now
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
If it's more than a few cans for dinner, I'm generally warier of the content and agree with others on the wonders of some Laotian beers. And I am neither a nationalist nor a communist. As for craft beers, this foreign crowd seems uninteresting and short-lived.
Ah yep, lucky you, one of the better hotels for sure. Enjoyhorace wrote: ↑Wed Jun 23, 2021 12:54 pm@PSD-Kiwi as I am British it wouldn't be hard for you to guess.
It is comfortable enough, wifi okay for netflix and playing chess, but TV is like a snowstorm and I haven't bothered to switch it on not even for the football! Opted out of the 30 dollar meal package and actually saving money by ordering off the menu , although I don't recommend any of the western dishes other than salads. Khmer dishes have been very good albeit expensive but it is a tourist menu.
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
Kampuchea, as they say, is 1st choice draft or local drop, or Angkor. I find Anchor like sex in a dingy, without bite. San miguel, corona (hold the virus), and the like, don't touch the sides, but ok if drier than an ---'s elbow, but they are really only breakfast beers. I was spitting cotton the other day and had a Tiger, and cried

A lot of it is aimed at and consumed by well-heeled locals.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Thu Jun 24, 2021 10:54 amThat's what used to be called home brew. At least you get a buzz off it though unlike the domestic tins, where a case just gets you a bit tired and bloated.
