Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, Sosua, Punta Cana were hot spots between 1980 and 1995.
Plan B - where do Expats move next ?
You've never been to Sosua? It's the Pattaya of the Caribbean.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Mon Oct 25, 2021 11:39 amMy thoughts? What is the D.R.?OriginalMix wrote: ↑Sun Oct 24, 2021 8:52 pmAny thoughts on The D.R.?

I think i might have been to Laos about 5 or 6 times, maybe more.Rune wrote: ↑Wed Aug 25, 2021 1:54 pmI'm staying here, but would like to go to Laos for a longer trip (once Covid has receded a bit). How is life different in Laos, compared to rural Cambodia? (besides the double-price/corruption - neither of which I experience much).simon43-1 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 09, 2021 6:18 amBack on topic
Laos:
I've been living and working in north Laos (Luang Prabang) for about 2.5 years now. Teaching science online, with an annual business visa and work permit. It's a very quiet place, especially since Covid-19 killed the foreign tourist trade. But no hassles of any sort, no corruption (that affects me), no double-pricing (I shop in the local market and pay the same as locals etc).
Not the kind of place if you want a 'wild' time. More the kind of place to sit and watch the silent and mighty Mekong river over a cold Luang Prabang beer
Loved it.
Cycled it alone, the first time from Luang Nam Tha, in the North, by The Golden Triangle, to Vientianne in 2003.
No real problems.
My wife and i then cycled from a remote Viet border town, through Southern Laos, to cross into Nong Khai, Thailand.
Such was the easy going country bumpkin nature of the Laotian's we mostly camped in rice paddy shelters, or the jungle by the side of the road.
Laotions were my wife's fave peeps of the region. (She's fluent in Thai)
This was a completely sleepless night below.
The rain came down and flooded the tent, so rigged up a hammock and tarp, and both got inside.

My wife actually managed to sleep in that!!
Living proof that Asians can sleep on a clothes line.
(Excuse shitty bikes)

France or southern Germany.
Rwanda, safest and cleanest country in Africa. Pretty cheap too.

Colombia has become a haven for expats. I've travelled extensively in sea and have given up on the area. Too hot mainly but realistically Cambodia is a shit hole. I'm a little too pissed to add all the benefits of Medellin but trust me it's great. Weather, easy visa, easy language, a new spot for digital nomads and one of the absolute cheapest places to live. More dangerous than Phnom Penh but realistically comparable to to American cities with neighbourhoods that are glorious and extremely safe. NO PCR tests required.

Year round spring like weather, 25 to 28 degrees, fantastic transit system that includes elevated. light rail, gondola systems that service the once poor slums in the surrounding hills that used to be ruled by Pablo Escobar into thriving committees, escalators that climb into the hills that attract tourists, restaurants Street art etc. Street cars. Beautiful shady clean neighbourhoods, great markets, clean streets, plazas, quick mountain getaways, 2 professional soccer teams, universities, and listed as the 131st most expensive place in the world to live on Numbeo.com Super friendly people, large expat areas with hopping night life restaurants parks etc. As well as super cheap local restaurants. Great architecture, museums. Green projects that employ an army of workers to plant trees and gardens around the city. Phnom Penh is a shit hole compared to Medellin. The only thing PP has that beats Medellin is better looking women. Lol. But there are some stunning women there too.
Heard enough? It's come a long way since the bad old days. Never got offered coke once.
