Sounds good.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
I used to go to Laos ( Vientiane ) a lot for work when i was living in Hanoi. I really looked forward to the trips. Great food. Cheap Laos Beer. A really quiet riverfront with relaxed resto-bars. Super nice people.
The only thing I disliked about Laos was their fuckin awful tiny and hard to get tuk tuks !

I recently moved from Luang Prabang to the Turkish coast. This was simply because I fancied swimming in the warm sea....
However, dumb as sh*te, I forgot that Turkey is freezing cold in the winter.....
So 2 weeks ago, I got on a plane and moved again (after some careful climate and visa research).... and ended up on the island of Mauritius, and I have to say that I am very happy with my move! Mauritius has a remote worker visa - so I can legally teach online from my new home. (This beach is 10 minutes from my home - I jog and swim here every morning before work).

What is food shopping like - market? Supermarket? Both?
How’s internet stability?
What paperwork does a person need to supply to obtain a remote worker visa?
Are there sharks or deadly jellyfish - or crocodiles?
Could a person get by speaking only English?

Thought of another question - how does a person get around without a scooter, motorbike, bicycle or car? Anything like tuk Tuks ?

You can rent modern apartments from about $350 per month. I pay $600 to rent a detached house in a nice garden with a private swimming pool I have 4g internet and a 100 MB fibre internet connection will be installed soon.
I go shopping at a modern shopping centre near my house, Intermarche supermarket,, local market stalls as well with fresh produce, Subway sandwiches, Indian takeaways.
4g internet is fast enough for Zoom classes IF you are not in a heavily-populated cell. So I live in a small village and get fast speeds all the time. Fibre internet service can be installed everywhere on the island.
For the visa (there is also a retired person visa if you don't need to work offshore), look here: https://www.edbmauritius.org/premium-visa You must transfer in $1,500 each month.
No dangerous animals at all! No dangerous snakes or large animals, no crocs, most beaches are protected by coral reefs, so little chance of a shark eating you!
Local language is Creole, then French, then English. Every shop person speaks English! (I usually speak French in an effort to 'dislodge' Thai as my second language in favour of French - right now I tend to throw some Thai words in with my French which makes for confused looks!).
There is a very good bus service, free for over 60's
I hope not to move again! Turkey was very good in almost all aspects, except the winter weather, and that negative point is really because I have delicate lungs - most people would have no problem. (I also managed to get my 12-month residence visa in Turkey in just 2 weeks, plus a free Covid booster etc. I give their online admin 5 stars when compared with Laos, Thailand etc).
5 grams of cannabis will get you a year's prison in Mauritius.
It is hard to find there!

Jeez......
I ahd a friend who worked there about 12 years ago. At the time she was 30 and single and found it incredibly dull as beautiful as it was. As you mention you are over 60 I guess that dullness wouldn't impact you. Is there any kind of nightlife?simon43-1 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 19, 2022 4:29 pmI recently moved from Luang Prabang to the Turkish coast. This was simply because I fancied swimming in the warm sea....

And I'll ask the question. How hot are the locals and how receptive to Western men are they?

Did I mention that Colombia's health care is rated the 22nd best in the world out ranking Canada and the United States and is available to residents retirees etc at very reasonable rates? Something like 26 of the top 60 hospitals in Latin America.
https://internationalliving.com/countri ... -colombia/
And sweet deals on airfare from the US and Canada with many cheap Latin American airlines servicing Colombia.

A lot of the local women are slim and sexy, but probably not receptive to fat, western men trying to chat them up. There are many nightclubs, but as I'm over 60 and clearly happy with dullness (according to your opinion), I obviously can't provide more data about these...Chilli wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 4:42 amI ahd a friend who worked there about 12 years ago.
