My Bucket List during the Covid Pandemic
I started hitting the breakes of my routines back in Jan 2020. By March 2020 i got seriously sick and only a miracle saved me from hitting the bag. The miracle was performed by a Surgeon from Ukraine and the swiss Director of the Hospital which in reality is basically a school for young khmer medical staff. Expectations from Barang run high when they hit the Hospital. They expect 5 Star service from a charity Hospital that was set up to treat sick children of poor khmer families for free. That has changed and thus saved my life which was hanging on a 24 hrs to go thread. The attitude of many Expats however has not changed.
3 weeks of intesive care, 2 meter of my intestines removed (the Director called it an Anaconda) and the not so promising message that i probably wouldn't survive it made me experience something i woulnd't ever had dreamed about. I received warm and tender care from khmer medical students 24 hrs a day/night, occasionally sweets, home made bakery, coconut juice while getting fed through multiple tubes. When a young british physiotherapeut girl turned up with a "tijuana taxi rack" i trained her how to do the i witnessed on tiktok. I couldn't have been in a better condition.
After 3 weeks i got out of the Hospital (still a bit green and yellow faced), lost 22 KG in the coming 3 weeks and never suffered anything. The biggest surprise was the hospital bill which came at a discount rate. At home i would have had to sell my house instead.
Next was to get occupied with something meaningfull. I started building a 100 meter long brick wall around my plot to keep the thieves from stealing my fruits. I had to be at the construction site 7 am , 11 am, 1 pm and pm to supervise the workers. After 3 month all was done and i needed another occupation again.
Planting 50 banana trees, filling up flooded land, drilling a deep well. All went smooth. Now what ?
I replaced the Gardener with myself, bought a lawnmower and started to cut the grass of about 1 hectar which took me more than a week (the gardener did it in 1 1/2 days.) My muscles started aching but i had super sleep and eat well.
House cleaning is not my speciality but it has to be done. Instead of hiring a cleaning lady i took it in my own hands. Holy shit, this really isn't my cup of tea. Getting the spider webs from a ceiling that is 3,5 mtr. high etc. ..... you'll get the picture.
Finally i ran into a woman from prey veng in herr 40s. She did the concrete driveway at a house nearby all on her own. Such women simply don't exist in any western country anymore. What's even better, she knew all the plants and i saw her at one lunchtime picking young mango leaves (reddish) and Moringa Tree Leaves as vegetables for her instant noodle soup. Boy do these women have knowledge !
I was so impressed that i asked her to clean up my garden that hasn't seen anything but weed during the past 10 years. It looks like a groomed park in paris now.
Clothes are an issue if you're over the average khmer size, which i am. Some repair on pants ? The lady could do it all..............and even perfect !
Health issues hit me again when my Moto tried to kill me for a 3. time. While overtaking a truck on a dirt road my gas decided to go full blast and made me hit the bushes while breaking. It did cost me a ruptured veine on my thumb which had to be stitched up. (Friggin painfull 3 injections before the stitching job made me hit the ceiling). Anyway thumb fixed and Dr. rewarded. This Dr. runs a separate office next to the Kampot referral hospital where i did not have to go through the testing and registration shit of the Covid infested Referral Hospital but got attention straight away (OK, his wife soaked my whole body in Alcohol before i was able to get behind the barrier for treatment.) 3 sessions in all cost me 100 USD of which 50 USD are a donation from me.
This left the damaged Moto. The Plastic repair clinic for Moto's delivered an equally perfect job at a discount rate and instant service.
Now you try to do this in any western (developed ???? Haha) country. Good luck it will take you month before you even get a date at a Dr. Office.
Cheers, I love Cambodia

I'd love to post a gif comment... But I couldnt find one which would do justice to the brilliance of this post.
