The Shop the rise and fall
The Shop the rise and fall
A long=standing institution, The Shop has recently changed hands.
The new owner is, reportedly, a well-off Khmer.
Several top-notch people have left.
Greet, the Dutch creator and owner has left, she sold.
Paul, the Ozzie manager has gone, A serious loss.
Bun Eng, the best damn Khmer restaurant manager you will ever meet, is gone. A very serious loss.
Quo vadis?

There are many shops in Cambodia, as far as I know. Please tell more about THE shop, what's special about it?

The Shop is okay, I used to go to the one in Tuol Kork a bit. They have tasty food. The clientele were a bit stuffy though.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
10 years ago I would have agreed, but now there are so many better options out there, maybe a change is for the best for all involved.

I used to visit and eat at The Shop alot, it was one of those rare businesses in Cambodia, a quality slice of home with delicious, reasonably priced goods, without being (too) colonial and arrogant, and also doing solid (not just talky) things to help the locals and the local community
Once upon a time it was a great place to buy some slightly overpriced lunch for take away, or maybe a brownie.
But that was a fucking aeon ago. I assumed it had shut down years back due to irrelevance

Never went there for food, just chocolate. Expensive as f*ck but good quality and a number of flavors you couldn't find anywhere in PP. I still miss Comme la Maison (or however you spell that) in Bkk1 too. Once bought / taken over by a Khmer owner it was run into the ground fast...
Just realised I've lived just round the corner from it for years and never noticed. Is it connected to The Wine Shop too? Will stroll along tomorrow and see what they've got.
If it's now to have a fall and rise, they should rename it Grot, like R.I. Perrin's place.

^ kind of funny that of all the things about you, knowing you didn’t know The Shop was right there is most surprising.
Hope you are well, Mr.

The shop was on its way out for years. once upon a time it was one of the few places to do decent breakfasts but now they are all over the shop (excuse the pun). Lots of competition. I went to the TK one a few times as not much out there back in 2013/2014 my last visit to the 240 one I realised how little it had changed. full of the wives of nearby Embassy staff with their annoying kids and still selling overpriced, and stupidly named options like the David Beckham, for their attempt at an English style which I am sure had been the same menu for nearly 8 years. Good locations, well run but probably a great time to sell.
I think an Australian friend once took me to Le Shop, somewhere near the back of the old Council of Ministers building. For a fancy French store, It was then a pretty grotty and hard to access location, with mid-street trash piles even higher than common for the time. I think it closed about the time The Shop opened, and I always thought they had just moved and slightly altered the name. From Alexandra's web link, it seems they were not connected. Anyone know?
