Yeah, if the 10k figure is to be believed no way anybody's just giving that up for morals sake. I mean theres a reason they aren't in cuffs
Favourite bars of all time in Phnom Penh
Kris took his daughter to the UK about 2 years ago permanently.
Rusty re-opened as "Rusty Boathouse" on the river in Kampot. Ribs have gone to shit, but the rest of the food is quite good.
As an edit I realize that the vine moved a few weeks ago to 244. Maybe to avoid the raids of 172chilli wrote: ↑Wed Dec 22, 2021 5:09 amNot necessarily. DoS has been raided and closed down before. The thing with DoS is that it was churning an alleged phenomenal amount of money over.
Red Fox, Pink Elephant, the Pizza joints all use the same dank weed no doubt supplied by some important person in charge of Daun Penh and so are allowed to continue.
DoS did its own thing and hence allegedly paid a hefty mobthly stipend to keep it allowed. Last time it allegedly took a bit more cash and operations soon resumed. Same will happen again I'm sure.
Will be interesting to see if the hotbed of alleged harder drug dealing (coke and MDMA) on 172, the vine and the big easy (not forgetting the cove ) have been paying their dues.
It's not like you walk into those places and the bar man asks if you want Columbian or the cheap Belize stuff. I have never been offered anything in either of those places and neither has any of my limited friend circle. Fox and DOS are very open and I can't imagine there's many countries in the world that have the substance illegal but there's multiple coffeshops operating openly and paying taxes (I presume).chilli wrote: ↑Thu Dec 23, 2021 1:59 amAs an edit I realize that the vine moved a few weeks ago to 244. Have you ever been accosted and offered the substances you mentioned in those establishments or are you just parroting the meme?
Here is my understanding of the Rusty saga
The one in Kep was open for a while - it had different owners and was not to replace the one in Kampot. No idea the arrangement between the two.
*RK 1 Kampot - was taken over by ex-wife of the Brit that owned it
*RK 3 Kampot - opened up as they believed they would lose RK 1 location and this was the replacement, no idea what happened there
*RK 2 Kampot - This was sold by the Brit owner a long time ago
*RK Kep - this had separate owners but had some kind of friendly arrangement I guess. I see the owners now posting in French last year on their FB page
*Dog House Kampot - he opened this up when his ex-wife took the Rusty Keyhole over

Did I say that you got accosted and offered on entry? No darling, I did not. It is well known that if you want the harder stuff you can get it from these places.Guest wrote: ↑Thu Dec 23, 2021 2:54 amIt's not like you walk into those places and the bar man asks if you want Columbian or the cheap Belize stuff. Likewise red fox you can go for a beer without being offered weed. Happy Pizza places and just getting a normal pizza
As the video of the former site owner showed. That's all I said or suggested . If you asked the right person you'd get your fix. Haven't seen the meme BTW how's it look?

Not my favorite bar, no, but was on a kick there for some months early on. I really needed to relax but really amped it up for them some nights. -part of the Hipstwah gentrification of Cambodia. Kinda amusing observing them trying to hide their developing ice habits while inviting in notorious khmer street girls thinking they were "saving" something from the "patriarchy".
One of her dogs shit in the middle of the room, sorta putting the star on the tree, and they were so dang hip, that one ran outside to hire a khmer woman (an old lady) to pick up a dog turd in tissue an throw it in the alley. They paid her five bucks.

See you in Hell
First, and favorite, bar was the Irish Rover, owned by Jim Keneally (RIP) and his Khmer wife. The bartender was Rin and the waitress (yes, only one!) was Nary. First went there on my first trip in 97, and many fond memories of this cosy little bar, located near 51 and Sihanouk.
Mojitos. I would have a longer list of least favourites
Mohitos. i have not heard t hat name for a while. of course Mohitos is also known as the biggest cluster-fuck in the history of bars in Cambodia in the last 20 years. it lasted 3 months for a reason. Mohotos was Staffed by some of the filthiest of shit I have ever come across in all my years of working in and around FnB in and out of Asia and from someone that has a brief stint at HM's pleasure that is saying a lot.Really wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 9:55 pmMojitos. Lets go through this as a user experience. You enter the door greeted by toothless crackheads who have been given the job of security. If they can stand up they will but more oft than naught they will be face first in a pot plant if they try. you are then squeezed past some of the absolute dregs of PP longstay detritus propping up the bar with the vague promise of nirvana and hi-society drinking and dining upstairs. these scumbags will try and get you to buy you a drink and they will even try to grope your significant other as you walk by but the reality is the 5 or 6 nigerians are the real threats here. they are the ones pretending to play pool while eying the door suspiciously. they smell of strong hybrid ganja and look like they are packing more than a flick knife. they are scum and if they are on the payroll it is unclear. they have certainly made the bar their own. Alongside them you have some of Phnom Penh's finest including Hutchins with his dirty greased black (badly dyed) hair pouring over some newly arrived kids passport with promises to help him. he is playing the long con with. this place suits shitbags like him.
The cook (i use the word with a degree of laughter) will be smoking a cheap cigarette at the bar and offer you the menu. his filthy black nails body odor and his forceful instance that it is REAL TexMex he is serving will put you off ordering anything but he will bring you a plate of cold greasy nachos with some unidentifiable cheese and lumps of cold gray gristle anyway on the house of course. Eating it will be a decision you regret for days.
you decide to take the advice of the barman cum owner that the beer upstairs is better than the shit they serve downstairs and order an overpriced craft beer. its $6 for 500ml and is warm as summer piss. he adds ice to the glass by hand and says it will be ok. his nails are equally filthy.
when you leave you realise they have over charged you by 4 drinks and the nachos were $12 a plate and the cramps are just the beginning of the pain you will have over the next few days.
all said though the downfall of the place was not the staff or the customers it was the morbidly fat and dull owner and his crackhead girlfriend. he made the dumbest mistake of his life impregnating that infected dick-bag of crazy and it cost him $40k +++ to let him get that baby out of the country. i never did find out how he explained that to his wife when it got it back home.
"hey honey, I erm, i got ya a gift from Cambodia. Be grateful it ain't herpes"
i tried to help him sell the place before he left but his greed was too much and the crazy bitch allowed her thieving family to strip the place of anything of value before any likely buyer could get even a 3rd of the asking price to him. I will miss the place if only for the adventure but to call it a favorite is a real stretch.

Wow. That's quite a bit to unpack. I was there maybe two or three times and it seemed fine.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Ok now tell us how you REALLY felt about the placeWilliam Wallace wrote: ↑Thu Jan 13, 2022 7:34 pm
