Favourite bars of all time in Phnom Penh
Always liked the Why Not bar. Friendly, 24 hrs, not the prettiest but fun girls. However I'm in no rush to go to any girlie bar for a while. Yes they've been vaccinated, albeit Sinovac, but being in an enclosed space with others, up close, who've no doubt been to the market earlier surely is asking for trouble. Only my opinion.

Is this "favourite bars of all time" or "favourite girlie bars of all time"?
From Rock Hard to Hard Rock - says it all.Guest9999 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 2:49 amIt had already gone pretty quiet when I arrived, but from photos it looked like Rock Hard Cafe, Sisowth, 2 doors from Phnom Penh Tourism, rocked pretty good during UNTAC.
It's progress: just in the wrong direction.
It wasn’t even near a 90 degree turn , and he turned “right” into the the tree instead of left the way the road was slightly gently turning ..johnny lightning wrote: ↑Sun Nov 14, 2021 2:44 amTony died several years ago doing a header into a tree on his moto on a 90 degree turn at Independence beach. Those of you familiar with the area will know which one I mean.
i visited the tree the next day ..

It is indeed a 90 degree turn. I should know as I have gone through that curve hundreds of times. Coming from up the hill it is not a sharp turn but if you are flying along it can bite you in the ass as you try to slow down. Many people visited "the tree" including myself and many of my mates. As Tony was a very experienced rider there was some speculation as to how he managed to do a header into it. I will leave it at that.
I hear Sharky’s Bar had a big opening party last weekend. How many owners has it had?
These new owners are Indian and Philippino.

I went out of kindness to Mike and some bored curiosity.
Mike will be spinning in his grave.
I went in to Sharky's near its original opening, when Adam P. still was a part owner, or at least said he was. (But before he stole it, Adam used to say he was THE owner of Bayon Pearnik too.) It was a huge empty space with a tiny bar, and a few tables. Then they put up a big black curtain, effectively splitting it in two. Much better, except the bathrooms were accessed through the empty half. Can't recall exactly how long it stayed that way, but as an infrequent customer it seemed it went through quite a few iterations. Good luck to the new team.
Wasn't it The Lido way back ?Gest9999 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 14, 2021 1:23 amI went in to Sharky's near its original opening, when Adam P. still was a part owner, or at least said he was. Passing recently I noticed there are two 'Sharky's' on that street now, albeit one had partly overwritten the signage with Taste of the Middle East or similar, some Iraqi place.
Who started the Pearnick ?
Don’t know who started Pearnik, Laud John will know of course which is probably why it died.
It’s back up of sorts. No new stuff and not the same format.

Yes, way back in UNTAC days. I heard it was run by a former legionnaire and was rough as hell. From Zero Hour in Phnom Penh: A Vincent Calvino Crime Novel:
Gunfire can still be heard nightly in Phnom Penh, where Vietnamese prostitutes try to hook UN peacekeepers from the balcony of the Lido Bar.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Elephant seals and Ebola sufferers. I kid you not, the guy that showed me Sophie's had bits dropping off. Fingers missing etc.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Thu Nov 04, 2021 7:04 pmWhere exactly was Sophie's? I remember going past there but never went in? I'm thing somewhere between Norodom and Psah Thmey?
More here:Sophie’s Club
It’s been some time now since this bar closed, but hundreds of hapless former customers are still taking antibiotics, anti retrovirals and combination therapy. We can only be talking about the frankly unshameable Sophie’s, whose closure last year put the strangely coveted title of Phnom Penh’s Rudest and Sleaziest Bar open to competition again.
Situated in between Psah Thmei and Russian Boulevard, a visit to Sophie’s involved walking through a dark unmarked door, a wander up two grimy flights of stairs followed by a very swift descent into Gomorrah. With its profusion of air headed slappers and men the size of elephant seals basking on sticky black vinyl sofas while being expertly and publicly fellated, a visit to Sophies involved being touched by something unearthly.
One brief pitstop was enough for me to come to the conclusion that all staff and regulars here should be tattooed with a health warning, similar to the sort of thing you find on the side of cigarette packets.

Wasn't it Adam, the English guy that had a stroke a few months back?
Any word on his condition?
I'm sure he was friends with LJ so he's pretty much out of luck I would imagine. Still, I heard he got back to England so I'm sure he's in the best of care.
