Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Supposedly the low cost of living. Obviously not as cheap as it was, though all relative I guess.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Wed Dec 15, 2021 4:58 pmCost of what?Ephrium wrote: ↑Wed Dec 15, 2021 1:16 pmWhy no one mention cost
Best thing about Cambodia for me:
Neighbors talk to each other,
They have a chat about what ever they want to and people are not afraid of their neighbors.
Kids get a chance to be kids, they can play in the street with each other, push and shove each other and fall over and still laugh about it, there is no parent in the background wanting to sue you over their kids skinned knee.
Our house is rather small so when more than a few people turn up for a meal, you set up a table or two on the footpath outside your house and no one complains about it.
Overall, if you are polite about your issues, in most cases, a solution can be found without the need to resort to threats or other means of enforcement.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Cheap and easy ER visa, low cost of living and proximity to Thailand ...in that order.

Yeah, it's all relative but certainly isn't the best as far as "cost of living" goes. I can live with that.Dylan Quint wrote: ↑Thu Dec 16, 2021 2:19 amSupposedly the low cost of living. Pfff, cost of living is low, when you live at a fraction of the material quality you have available in Western countries.
Living even a partial Western living style sets you significantly more back than in Western countries.
Daily "local" items are cheap, all the higher level rest, including education, does cost a fortune.
I've been in Bangkok for a few days.
I'm surprised by the low cost of living compared to Cambodia. Phnom Penh anyway.
Public transport that works well and covers the whole city, markets where u can eat a small local delicious dish for about 50-60 bath (under$2), supermarkets without inflated prices like lucky & co (I reckon 30-40% cheaper and lots more choices).
We're renting a 4BR, 4bath villa with a small garden and parking space in a quiet street of a residential area like TK but close to an MTR station, for about $1000/month + utilities which should be way cheaper than EDC. I bought a foldable bike at decathlon for about $180, which I can take on the subway and dirt cheap cabs for longer rides. Traffic is better and more disciplined than in PP, and the smooth roads way easier to ride a bike.
The choice of high end restaurants isn't limited to half a dozen upscale hotels at outrageous prices. Medical care compares to Europe or the US and the cost is probably lower than in PP. I have been told that the bureaucracy sucks but it took about 10 minutes to get the Thailand pass for the wife and for me, which allowed a VOA. I don't drink much so I'm not bothered by expensive beer or booze.
So far so good, except our owner who's some sort of old female Chinese nazi dwarf witch who lives across the road and who has rules and fines for everything ("noise after 10pm : 5000 bath").

I rate my Khmer family as one of the best parts of my Cambodian experience.
I got lucky with the one i married into. Have a great mother in law who dotes on me and my kids and lots of very nice sister and brother in laws who were all having kids at the same time as us. The usual random extended family drama here and there ( moto accidents etc ) but nothing more than my family back home. It was always a pleasure getting together will all of them .
I love the family first / individual second model in Cambodia. You don't get that back in the west that's for fucking sure !
I miss my Khmer family and we regularly video hook up with all of them.
Here's a favourite shot my my mum rocking a Cali 2 t shirt

Rated R for Ricecakes
Thai is cheaper? They are about equal but Thai is smaller portion. But is it true now you travel, on top of Quarantine, high air tickets, you must fork out 100 PCR before and after?
The best thing about Cambodia is the deals you won't mention online lest budget-conscious whites escape the tyranny of lust that rages in the West today. The best thing is the silent understanding between two individuals, just from a smirk, without even uttering a single word.
