When will you go "home"
When you fondly but finally call it a day in Cambodia?
When the wife runs out?
When the cash runs out?
When the jobs run out?
The old bastions of Phnum Penh are slowly shuffling out with just a few of the old hopeless cases left.. When will you call it a day?
Too many friends lost recently, I can't see more

I called it a day years ago, when I realised the gun had become boredom and there was little stimulating me there.
I enjoyed my time there but was similarly happy to leave and have no regrets. I doubt ill ever be back. It was just another stop in many and I have no nostalgic affection for it.
Too many expats don’t know when to leave. I look at several expat grandees from my time there - including 440 stalwarts - and their lives as pictured on FB look truly awful. No money, poor health, no hope and nothing to look forward to except the occasional two or three cans of piss with equally desperate friends once or twice a week.
That’s not life. It’s barely survival. It’s just fucking depressing.

I'm coming up on nine years in the kingdom, no plans to leave. I live in BKK1, after years on Riverside and then Russian Market area. Couldn't be happier. Got all 3 jabs. Absolutely love it here - people are friendly and helpful, prices are cheap to affordable, the climate is to die for. I don't drink, don't date, don't party. I'm so healthy I wonder if I found the fountain of youth. 71 years young, figure I've got another 30 years left. The government leaves me the hell alone. Why on earth would I ever want to return to the US? It's a failing, dysfunctional state. Nope, I found paradise and I'm staying.
Not sure if 15 or so years counts as "Stalwart" - but the biggest decision factor for me will be the secondary education of my son. Junior school here is fine, in fact on a past visit to the UK to meet family, my son was way ahead of his peers around the same age, so that was comforting. Even though I'm not one of the 2-3 cans of piss guys & money isn't my main worry, the cost is just absurd versus the quality that I've seen delivered here, it just seems to fall off the chart for 11y+. That'd be my main concern & cause for moving back to the UK if anything.
I do miss London whenever I'm back there; but just a few clips of UK life on the news is a sharp reminder that it just isn't for me any longer. Plus the old folks live in the south of France, and my sister is in the middle of Spain, nothing in the UK really for me to go "home" to. Although I'd kill for an Abbott Ale.

Kids are the biggest driver for sure. 99% of long term expats i know who have left Cambodia have left for the benefit of their kids.....
hell.....i think even Felgerkarb left for that reason - or are we still not allowed to say that ?

Rated R for Ricecakes
Looks pretty relaxed overall here, compared to other places right now. But that could change. Schools do not have international prestige. But is it important for most children? I do not think so. It's more about having access to technology, to the fast Internet these days. The latest school designs don't even have classrooms anymore, just a giant playground. In any case, I love this whole area, just a smile from a pretty young girl saves the day. Try this "at home" more often than not you get an attitude and accusations of abuse.

I’m genuinely curious to understand why you participate in this forum (even if just passively reading) if you have no nostalgic affection for Cambodia? Is it just idle curiosity, or what?Gone already wrote: ↑Tue Dec 14, 2021 12:09 amHarry Monk wrote: ↑Mon Dec 13, 2021 11:09 pmWhen you fondly but finally call it a day in Cambodia?

As for the depressing lives of people mentioned - I guess to them it’s better than any alternative. The fact of life is that some of us live through depressing stages - it is what it is

it might be just that your kid is smarter than his peers in which case they’ll be fine in “big school”.Spigzy wrote: ↑Tue Dec 14, 2021 1:03 pmNot sure if 15 or so years counts as "Stalwart" - but the biggest decision factor for me will be the secondary education of my son. How much did it cost to build or buy your home? Poll.
