Why did I always think this guy was a black man? RIP.

It's a little sadder in that the anomalous or more eccentric expat/traveler are a much rarer creature throughout the region these days - figuratively and literally a dying breed.

I wonder if his tumors contributed to his unique characteristics. He didn’t suspect that he had cancer until he developed a visibly large tumor in his armpit, but perhaps that was not his first.
Annie wrote on Twitter that his siblings ignored her pleas for help. She desperately tagged Elon Musk and Lady Gaga among others in her tweets, turning every stone to ask for help.
When Steve was deported from Cambodia I had a window of opportunity to speak to him on a personal level quite a lot because he wanted to get his story out and I offered a platform. Eventually he got in contact with Reuters but nothing ever came from it, and Steve became upset about not being able to post freely on the forum.
He lived a very different life. He was abused throughout his childhood and grew up in different temporary homes, hopping between countries.
Steve had two older sisters, an older brother born in Venezuela, a half sister born in Nigeria and a half brother born in Libya. Steve’s mother passed away from tetanus 3 weeks after he was born.

Sad to read this.
One of the most interesting characters ever on this forum. Not always in a positive way but never boring and definitely part of our history. RIP Batty.

Sorry to hear that he was abused. I can't help but think that contributed to his mental health issues.Alexandra wrote: ↑Thu Apr 07, 2022 6:15 pmHe lived a very different life. He was abused throughout his childhood and grew up in different temporary homes, hopping between countries.

I'm surprised that he grew up in different temporary, presumably foster, homes. He seemed to talk of his family's life in Libya, and his birth in Trinidad, which indicates his dad or mum was some sort of professional oil worker. I got the impression he moved around a lot but always thought it was with his actual family.
Trinidad has been an oil center for a very long time
RIP Batty - at times annoying, infuriating and funny all at once. I equated reading the infamous epic thread he started with that old TV show called Soap for some reason.
RIP to Stephen.
I still am not sure what to think of his batshit account. Previously I was certain it was just a wind-up account and those ramblings were just for entertainment purposes. Turned out that some of the ramblings were more based in reality than I expected, such as his issues with the US Embassy.
Could be the account was a mix of both, he was really a bit "batty" but also playing it up on the forum. A mix of reality and fantasy.
Good luck to his missus who did all she could to try and help him.

Temporary homes can mean just that, without it being about foster homes. A family moving from place to place is temporarily located somewhere until moving to the next temporary home for work, and the next, etc.Starving Pelican wrote: ↑Thu Apr 07, 2022 7:43 pmSorry to hear that he was abused. It was a combination of both. In his words:
“I had a rough childhood from my parents both beating me and then I was placed in children's homes and they beat the shit out of me and I eventually ended up in Borstal.”
I’ll try to write a piece in a few days. I’m a bit overrun by work and travel currently.
