What did I do wrong? What could I have done?
I flew into the country two weeks ago.
First, security at the airport went through my luggage, pulled the SD card out of my camera, and scanned it.
I chilled out for a while after that. I thought it might be an isolated incident, but I was definitely freaked out.
Then I noticed a guy trailing me. Wherever I went in Phnom Penh, he was always in the room, or standing on the street, outside. This really started to freak me out.
Finally, the hotel owner clued me in that the police had been in my room when I was out and about. I can confirm this because some of my things were not in the same state as when I left them.
I can only assume that the police have assigned this creep as some sort of handler for me. Either that, or he's part of some sort of gang. Let's be honest. In this country, they're one and the same, right?
I discreetly hopped in a taxi, and I've relocated to Siem Reap. I had them drop me at a location distant from where I'm actually staying, just in case.
I'm super creeped out by this, and I'm thinking of leaving the country tonight. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this normal!?
What should I do? Maybe this is because I didn't offer a bribe?

Maybe you are more observant than me but I’ve never offered a bribe responded to an attempted coercion for special treatment of an official’s relative and I’ve never noticed someone following me.
It’s a bit tricky not to think you are just being paranoid.

When violet says you’re paranoid, it pays to listen.
The last time someone posted that they were being followed, they were later arrested with a hard drive full of child pornography.

I generally get a better understanding of paranoid people better by following them around.

Never heard of anything like it in 15 years. You must have been flagged at immigration for something. Maybe a case of mistaken identity, but the competent authorities actually can be quite competent, from time to time.

This. I have NEVER even had any of my luggage inspected upon arrival, and I fly in/out regularly. Either you were flagged for some reason, or suffering meth induced paranoid delusion

I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
You know when I follow you around town, it does make me wonder why you're so paranoid enough to follow paranoid people around - now it makes sense!

Just because it hasn't happened to other people doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I've watched those custom programs from lots of different countries and often seen them check people's laptops and hard drives when they're coming from suspect countries
