Rudest supermart staff in town
Rudest supermart staff in town
I'm thinking of making it a contest to find the rudest staff in town at the local markets here. There must be a glass front. It must be a western style supermarket as developed in the USA. Shopping carts, air conditioning, etc. But the staff must be rude and obnoxious to white foreigners. Like, for example, gladly serving locals who queue up in front of you. Giving you an attitude and calls everyone but you "Bong". Take your money with a sense of disrespect, like you have to pay double the price to begin with. Give a disrespectful attitude. Talking and joking with their colleagues in Khmer about you or the demeanor of "some people". A parking lot attendant ignoring you and your big shopping bag for this VIP SUV driver just having a few drinks. No one speaks English even refusing to use google translator. Serving the Chinese lords as local gods while maintaining their attention to you like they would a street dog? Charging overpriced for most regular items because of their high brow standards?
These are the local marts that you can find outside of the normal white areas around town. So let me know what you think? I don't want to name any specific places just yet, but a few come to mind here where the term business school is something that none of the staff can identify with?
My highest standard of service goes to Angkor Mart in TTP, they are always nice and accommodating to foreigners.

Maybe you come across as an entitled grumpy twat?
Never had any issues in my 48 years in Cambodia. Or is it 52?

pew, pew, pew, pew!
Apparently not at Angkor Mart, Aeon Mall and the many places where it seems a standard level of business etiquette has been taught to staff.
I am only posting this here in the interest of educating and internationalizing certain aspects of the retail offering in the city. I don't think I could change much about it. So many people were removed by the KR and it seems like certain places still suffer from a complete lack of decent behavior towards foreign customers.
Sorry to say so.

I can't compete with YTP's 4852 years in Cambodia, but after a good 15+ I honestly don't have a clue what you're wittering on about. All the supermarkets I've used here from Lucky, Thai Huot, Bayon, Aeon, Smile, Kiwi, etc etc have been super nice and friendly since day 1.
But if you wanted a "really shit customer experience" in general theme to kick off, I would glady advance VFS Global as a prime centre of asshattery.

The only problem I experienced in supermarkets is when they stop serving the local Cambodian in front of you and start serving you instead.
It's embarrassing.

And why has the role of "educating and internationalizing" fallen to you?I am only posting this here in the interest of educating and internationalizing .
Not sure where you are from, but overall I would say that Cambodia has some of the nicest (note that I am NOT saying the most efficient or math-savvy) retail staff I have come across anywhere.
You sound like someone from an NGO: the poor people have suffered so much and everything is because of the KR. Time to move on, me thinks. So many people were removed by the KR and it seems like certain places still suffer from a complete lack of decent behavior towards foreign customers.

Yes, all of these big chains seem to be doing just fine. I think of the smaller family owned marts here and there that make it a problem to give all the positive attention to the disgruntled locals who take the time to pay slowly, oh so slowly. As I stand and wait, as soon as I'm served another local displays his things close enough to push me away, the guard tells my passapp driver to leave for not belonging to their gang. I am quickly served, with the added stress of extreme impatience, by a VIP buying a tiny drink for himself. I do not care at all. I assume you are unfamiliar with these places despite your advanced experience here.

It's terrible how the Khmer Rouge removed so many people who had decent behavior towards foreign customers. It's led to a disaster in modern-day shopping experiences.Hanno wrote: ↑Sat Aug 13, 2022 5:37 pmYou sound like someone from an NGO: the poor people have suffered so much and everything is because of the KR. Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
There's still a very militaristic approach to running many a fancy business here. So the local supermart is not run by businessmen, but by a police family. It's usually full of little egos trying to find ways to prove their own importance while forgetting the basic rules of international gentlemanship. When they find a foreigner who isn't afraid to talk about it, I've seen them go to the facility set it up, just to see if they can get the guy to cross the line of public decency. Then maybe even book the guy to make some money off of it. But hey, I know where to take it easy and just ignore it and take the long road down to where the white people live. Really just laughing about it here. Not really giving two cents about it.
I've had bad experience with Bayon staff but that was back in 2010 when I arrived here. Since that time I no longer bring them my money there so no idea if they have changed. I usually go to Thai Huot, Aeon minimart or a local shop around the corner. No complaints.
As far as local markets go, BKK over Russian Market. Better prices and friendlier if you speak a few words in Khmer.

generally the only way to deal with these absolute arseholes that won’t speak English to you. Like who do they they they are(!) is to get angry, shout and do your country proud. It’s the only way they will learn.
On the other hand, if you don’t act like a twat. I find most people are very friendly to you

I’ve read that 10 times and it made more sense backwards, which is what you seem to be.
I met a local guy who couldn’t whistle. In fact I’d guess 99% of the population can’t, I doubt HE can.
That’s clearly the KR fault.

I suggest renaming this thread from "Rudest supermart staff in town" to "Most moronic supermart customer in town"
