Marketing indifference
Marketing indifference
On my travels, I passed a very nice-looking resort on the Mekong.
I noted the name and number and made a mental note to go there sometime.
Three phone calls over the course of a weekday morning (it's open 24/7, apparently)went unanswered,
as did 2 emails.
I finally got (un) lucky, and somebody answered the phone, and I was passed to 3 different people, none of whom could answer my halting Khmer (mea culpa)
I went on to their website to get more information regarding their menu and other facilities, couldn't find it, and received a short message "it's not updated". Being an incurable optimist, I tried to book a room and asked for confirmation.
3 days later, nada.
I sometimes think that the real threat to the tourist trade isn't COVID, or the new alarmist threat du jour, but the marketing.
Constructive suggestion: offer basic, low-cost/ free marketing skills courses (bookings, adverts, prompt answers to emails and other enquiries)via Department of Tourism, so that this kind of enquiry can be handled productively in at least Khmer, and preferably also in English and perhaps Chinese or French.

I emailed the Dept. of Tourism many times..no answer.

#notmyjob
It cracks me up here where shops often have staff members for nearly every small role. The cashiers ring up the tills but know nothing about products and they sit and scratch their ass for 30 mins between customers,
The cleaner is off sick so the mess will wait for them until tomorrow. And nobody has any authority to do anything outside the defined parameters of their job. So many times I have walked away and my business has been lost because there was nobody there capable, willing or authorised to make a decision.
One of the first things I did here was multi-skill my staff so they could cover each other’s jobs, then I empowered them to make decisions without referring everything to me.
Maybe the marketing guy is off sick…

Or when the staff follow you around, bugging the shit out of you, then you eventually ask a question and of course it's like quantum physics to them.

It's all about it not being their job, they will get the same pay if they help you or not and they won't get extra for doing moreផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Wed Aug 31, 2022 11:04 am#notmyjob

I've often walked our of places when the incompetent fucks have avoided the problem thinking I've scored a moral victory, but at the end of the day nothing changes and these useless bitches will just get paid the same as always
Following on from smelly pop above.
Walked into Brown’s Coffee on TK Avenue this week and it was a cacophony of “Suusaday”, “Hello”, “Welcome”, like I’d walked into a girly bar.
At least 8 staff, mostly behind the counter. Very odd.
Nice coffee though.
One guy offered to take my coffee upstairs. He had “Trainee” on his badge. I guessed it was some Khmer name and attempted to pronounce it. Sounded feminine. (Afterwards I realised I was saying “Tranny”)
He looked confused.

Another thing: 'PM for price' on social media adverts.

But, as you say it changes nothing, they’ll just shrug and think barangs are weird.
It’s not incompetence though, I’m sure they could/would help if they felt empowered or motivated to.
But when staff are paid $200 a month, they couldn’t care less if business thrives or not, if it fails then they’ll just go on and get another $200 a month job.
It’s the boss’s fault.
@tourdef if they actually reply to your inquiry it is not too bad.
That stupid law which caused some shops to post prices in Khmer Riel only (or with a very small, hard to read USD scribbled in the corner).....
But yes, service sucks across all industries here. Maybe because there is no real accountability like in the West? If you get mad staff simply resigns. Contracts are non-enforcable.
Salary is in my experience not an issue. I have tried everything from paying more, bonus (money or time off), paid training. It does not retain nor motivate them.... And as a business there are limits to what we can spend. Bigger players entering the market can pay better wages.

I was complementing a internet shop employee on how fast his internet was and mentioned I would be using this shop from now on, he said sorry sir you don’t understand this is not my shop I’m just work here so I don’t care ( big smile).
I don't know how anyone survives on $200 a month let alone $150 - rent, gas, food "other costs". How do people survive if they have a kid(s)?
Sister-in-law has had a few jobs and they just treat her like a slave. Really taking the piss. One place she worked at saw me, wife and kid pull up in my car (90s Honda!) to talk to her. After, her boss told her she had to pay full price for the discounted food they provide because "You have barang family". WTF!
That was the same place where she didn't get any time off. 7 days a week. (They fired her by giving her a piece of paper and she was told to read it at home).
If that is the normal way companies treat the locals it's no wonder the employee doesn't give a fuck. Or is why the employer doesn't give a fuck - because they know they will leave?
My experience with car garages is the same, with regards to knowledge and "give a fuckness". Utterly useless in my 62 years here. (Although I have found a great, but expensive, garage in Chroy Chanvar)

This is a continual mystery to me too.
Many of the low paid jobs also offer (crappy) meals twice a day. But still, no idea how they do it.
I used to think that they were master budgeters…but my wife doesn’t trust herself to manage the household budget. She reckons if she has access to it then she’ll just fritter it away - ‘better for us if you manage money bong’
I don't know any people on $200 pcm any longer - it's not 2015 any more
Most of my subordinates earned $700/1000, even the useless ones were taking home $400/500 plus insurance, transport, meals etc
My dumbest niece; proper plank of wood, works six days a week as a waitress, seven hours a day plus a meal and she's on $375
$200 is the lowest of the lowest even in the garment industry -90% of the garment workers earn substantially more than the minimum
Times are changing
Maybe my sister is thicker than your niece. She’s on $160 now.
Most waitress jobs I see are in the $150 area. Maybe that’s just the company you keep?
