Is Cambodia getting too expensive?
You would need around 3,054.78$ (112,936.83฿) in Bangkok to maintain the same standard of life that you can have with 3,000.00$ in Phnom Penh (assuming you rent in both cities). This calculation uses our Cost of Living Plus Rent Index to compare cost of living. This assumes net earnings (after income tax)

I used to go to Cambodia because it was so cheap. Doesn't seem like it any more.

i see good apts/condos in PP for around $400-700, Bangkok will be around 25-35,000 baht
eating out ( good food) will cost ya less in restaurants in PP but not as cheap or good as eating street flood in Bangkok
most everything u need buy will cost ya more in PP except drinking and smoking cigs
so if u enjoy night outs more than nights in, PP will be cheaper
i'd say easy to get by in both places for $2,000 -$2,5000 and really enjoy urself

Even if Cambodia was 50% more expensive than Thailand I would stay here.
I don’t care.

Most prices should be much higher actually to help improve the economy, have better standards and drive out losers.
Examples:
- progressive tax on fuel, funding public transport
- property value tax supporting safety and quality of construction and public services of street cleaning and maintenance
- increased energy costs and subsidising a FIT for solar
- nationalisation of unfinished or abandoned real estate and a national fund to stabilise prices
- enforcement of taxes and fees on restaurants and bars, making them responsible for the cleanliness of their locale, plus reducing unsocial activity
- a 30% tax on all imported finished, packaged food and drinks to encourage domestic production and improve Cambodian diets
- similar progressive import taxes depending on sector and a corresponding reduction to export tariffs and charges
- increasing total visa fees more in line with Thailand, etc., at about $1.5K per year
- minimum alcohol, tobacco pricing, equivalent to 10,000 Reils per liter at 5% alcohol by volume and 1000 Reils per gram of refined tobacco
- a taxi driver licencing system, with recourse and policing system, paid for by a 20% tariff on fares

Cambodia was never cheap, I noticed that the first time I came here from Thailand over 20 years ago.

I manage for a lot less, but I'm a free bird. I never had to wear a company polo shirt, I never had to get into awkward situations with strangers. just enjoying the family, the weather, the well-connected fiber network, and cooking healthy, affordable meals from fresh produce at an incredible price most of the time delivered right to my door by courteous comrades of all degrees. Lots of time to get down with doing what I want, when I want. And nobody telling me what to do.
I don't see any litter lying on the streets, unless the owners of the property decide so. Air quality has improved greatly with older cars and tuktuks replaced. There are more and more high-end malls to browse, and from PP the ocean is close enough for comfort.
Please stay away from Cambodia if you don't like it, I don't really mind having less to share with anyone.

What would you say are the reasons that you would consider Cambodia to be more desirable than Thailand?
I find Cambodia to be filthy, corrupt, lawless, with very poor infrastrucure, and services. Poverty is rife drug use is rampant, some of the worst dregs of the Western world flee there. Forests are depleted, beaches are polluted, drivers ignore basic rules of the road, and westerners treated like ATM machines. Chinese criminals rule the roost in Sihanoukvile and conduct human trafficking.
Phnom_penh and Cambodia are several steps below Bangkok and Thailand as international destinations.
The competent authorities are so lame that they are too be avoided.
Dollar for dollar I'm finding less reason to return to Cambodia as opposed to other tourist or retirement destinations.
I used to like it there but the more I think about it the less appealing it seems. And yes price is a consideration. Why wouldn't it be?

There was a time when Cambodia’s lawlessness mixed with a degree of naievity made it wonderful. Now it is the worst of both worlds - lawless, deeply cynical and the growing influence of an uneducated but rich-through-corruption upper middle class makes it simply horrible.
For some, the allure of Cambodia's dysfunction is too strong to resist.

Sorry but I choose to spend my hard earned retirement money on quality and value. Right now Cambodia doesn't seem to have either.
Don't get me wrong, I've always been fascinated with Cambodia but for me it just seems to get worse as time goes by. You can't keep harping on the fact that they went through the terrible Khmer Rouge regime. That was almost 50 years ago. Vietnam hasn't been held back.
I love most of the people there. They are for the most part gentle and easy going.
I'm just looking for input into whether most people find Cambodia still offers the same kind of value and adventure that it did in years past.

It's great to have the freedom to choose. It's easy to avoid the dregs, they usually stay with each other. You might find a few out of 172, but I doubt they'll even notice you unless you start complaining to their face.
If you manage to keep a good relationship with your local family connections, then they will take care of everything and you will avoid dealing with the system at all outside of your annual trip to your favorite agent. I have had absolutely no problem with the officials in this regard.
I see very little difference between Thailand and Cambodia apart from driving on the left.
Bangkok is much bigger, and therefore it is also much easier to find areas where the infrastructure and lifestyle offerings excel. But take a look at smaller towns in Thailand, and you'll find the same problems as here if not worse.
Bangkok should be compared to Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, not sleepy little Phnom Penh.
