HIV in Cambodia
A post on the other forum has got me intrigued. I didn’t want to post there because maybe it could seem a bit antagonistic and insensitive towards a pretty messy situation. Also I was banned there a while back so now only read it as a guest.
Some guy is going through a pretty tough time in hospital and it transpires that he has HIV, as had his now deceased partner. If I understand right, he says that they both got it whilst receiving care in hospital. This doesn’t seem right to me, maybe he is just not thinking straight and is pushing explanations which are logically deficient.
Is HIV transmission common here these days through careless hygiene in medical facilities (as he alleges)? I know loads of people who have been in hospital care here in very basic facilities and none of them (as far as I know) got infected, I only know 2 HIV positive people here and neither were infected in hospital. It would seem massively unlucky for both him and his partner to get infected this way.
It’s a little unfortunate now that this patient now needs blood donated, and after his allegations about how common this HIV issue is, I wonder how many people will be turned off donating.

I seem to recall a (possibly fake) doctor around Battambang a few years back that infected a heap of patients with HIV using dirty needles.
In a hospital setting it would take so many failures though for it to happen in this age.
That guy you are referring to looks like he's full blown AIDS. That would mean he's had it for a long time and it has gone untreated. AIDS is mostly avoidable with current HIV antiviral medication.
I'm guessing intravenous drug user or a swinger lifestyle. Or both.

I wouldn't put it past any of the local clinics/hospitals to not follow needle prep to the letter; touch wood, I've only needed to go for an MRI scan at Royal PP for torn knee ligaments and that's about as far as I'd want to venture. Roy.al PP at least appears to be a decent functioning hospital, my son was born there and had all his vaccinations there also, no drama. But if you're out in the sticks, it would have to be a grave concern around procedure and even medical qualification to treat any disease/injury without making it worse. Perhaps there should be a sticky thread on K440 on tried/trusted medical practitioners around the provinces, just in case.

There are numerous hospitals in PP with very good quality of care and practises.
I think Royal PP hospital does very well out of that kind of perception though!
But maybe you are right, out in the sticks best practise probably isn’t followed. That, coupled with the love of an IV drip may give increased risk.

I remember that, and also remember the public outcry about it. It was taken seriously and the guy was sent to prison. As far as I remember.
Any clinic hospital doing it now wouldn’t last long. It would be all over the news and the big man would be commanding that Min of Health investigate tout suite.
I just can’t believe that it is prevalent.
That guy on tof lives in denial, he's clearly a full blown aids patient, probably had the virus for decades without being testedផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Wed Sep 28, 2022 10:14 amI remember that, and also remember the public outcry about it. Easier on his mind to blame various hospitals than accept grim reality imo

to think it might be happening in the stick's still, is unsettling to say the least
Whose to say others have not been infected by dirty/used needles?
when i used to travel alot in the 70's thru SE Asia an Africa, many countries required vaccines which many did not have or had but out of date> carrying a Clean unused needle was a MUST have
Who knows 100% how his wife got it, but he "might" have gotten it from her
ur guess is pure BS and uncalled for

Messy because it’s a very personal account. Messy because he’s either confused, doesn’t know or is deliberately not telling the whole truth.Phuket2006 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 28, 2022 3:22 pmnot messy, sad and a lesson to those without access to their money, insurance or someone to count on to be with ya and a fucked landlord
He should just get the whole thread deleted.
Anyone with half a brain knows the consequences of not having a fall back plan if the shit hits the fan.

Probably a combination of all 3 but confusion the leading one. A symptom of low oxygen is confusion. It's certainly plausible that he is not getting enough from the hospital.

And messy cause it's HIV and he probably didn't know until the thread was week into a half dozen pages to and very public.
Personally I doubt that both he and his partner got it from the hospital.
I won't speculate here, but it does make you wonder how prevalent HIV is in Cambodia.
Wasn't it VERY prevalent years ago?

Yes, in the 90s. It's been declining since.
