Where have all the Geckos Gone?
Where have all the Geckos Gone?
Long time passing..
In years gone by they were just about the sole source of amusement, even gambling, for many in the evenings.
It struck me last night - the lights have changed. There used to be clouds of insects round street lights for example, but now LED or something is used so no insects. Then fewer geckos I suppose.
That's all.

Funny you should say that; I had a gecko along for a ride the other day. Saw this little fella on my gym bag in the house one night, tried to get him outside where he ought to be, but he was having none of it. Thought nothing of it until I got to the gym a couple of days later & saw him on the back of my bag - I'd just ridden my motorbike, at some speed from home to gym & thought it funny he must have enjoyed the ride. Figured he would enjoy the plants & new scenery at the gym, left him to it whilst I went for a workout. Speedy Gonzalez my way home again afterwards & found the little bugger had bought a return ticket!!
Haven't heard a Tokay in a while though, only bloody barking dogs at 3am; seriously how does a local sleep through that when I can hear their dog 2 blocks away?

I've noticed the same. Maybe it's because of them being poisoned by bug sprays or something?
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Cities here have grown at an incredible rate. Many old buildings that were safe environments for geckos were destroyed, often the geckos with them. New buildings take time to acquire wildlife.
Get yourselves a solar security light, they are very cheap now, put it on auto setting. Around 6pm it switches on. The insects will come, and sooner or later the geckos will follow. Providing some plant cover will also help, palm trees or 'money trees' are cheap/ grow quickly/provide good cover. Do NOT use pesticides or spray anywhere near where you want to see geckos.
But...before you do that...chase the bloody cats away! They kill anything and everything, indiscriminately, just for fun.

They still come in the kitchen when I'm cooking but there aren't as many of them as before.
When I think about it I haven't heard the old tokay since my French neighbours cut down some trees. I loved hearing him cry fah-cue, fah-cue. And it saved me from having to do it.
The birds don't seem to go quiet now after dark. Maybe light pollution, and loss of habitat.

You too huh? I like to do it from the balcony in a low slung sarong to announce to my neighbours and rivals I'm getting jiggy with it
In an average year, my three cats kill six or seven geckos, one real lizard, five birds and two bats.
They are ambush predators by nature and have no consciousness that what they are doing is morally wrong.

Could that be because a cat killing animals is NOT in fact morally wrong?Happydragon1234 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 02, 2023 8:26 pmIn an average year, my three cats kill six or seven geckos, one real lizard, five birds and two bats.

By definition nothing any animal does can be defined by morality. Morality is a human construct.

It isn't morally wrong for the cat. It's morally wrong for the owners to introduce this destructive domestic animal into the eco-system. "Oh but they are so cute, my fur-babies", etc. Unless you have a problem with vermin such as mice/rats there is no excuse for you to keep such an environmentally unfriendly creature.Happydragon1234 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 02, 2023 8:26 pmIn an average year, my three cats kill six or seven geckos, one real lizard, five birds and two bats.
