Front page prototype 1.0
Front page prototype 1.0
Still very much work in progress- this is just a prototype to see what can be done before spending more on the design and pricey extras.
It's taken a lot of time just to get it this far. Many photos have sadly gone, but the old articles still remain online.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

It's not a horrible look, and an improvement on the previous in my opinion. I'd be incline to utilize the full width of the page instead of having just a centre channel, perhaps with with News, Analysis, and Latest Forum Posts sharing equal space across the top so you're giving anyone who lands on the page more than one reason (news) to click - improving reader retention.

Never looked beyond the forums in my case, change it to whatever you like

Viewing on my phone it’s a full screen display if content. Will check it out on a laptop at some point if I rememberLondo wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 7:16 pmIt's not a horrible look, and an improvement on the previous in my opinion. Looks fine

My 2 cents: use a dark background and light font, the reverse of what you have now.
In addition, I think you should have told people forums were still operational, while the new thingy was under construction, I think you lost some people

Looks fine but i never go there, so up to you
"We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer." HST
Looks good but it feels like you’re focusing on the wrong thing. I’ve never been convinced the front page attracts much interest and it certainly doesn’t seem to drive much traffic or activity in the forum, which is surely the heartbeat of 440.
KiR used to claim 440’s value came from the articles stored in the archive. He had dreams of publishing them one day.
Frankly he was wrong. Most were rubbish and I wrote many of the worst.
I’d like to see more ideas to get traffic and activity on the forum. Londo is doing a great job initiating new threads yet it still seems difficult to get posters to engage.

It's hard to generate conversation when the vast majority of members have heard, seen, and read it all before. This is why expat scandal and gossip is such great fodder - it's fresh or new, added to the human condition's ravenous appetite for topics to gloat over (or the individual's desire to feel better about his/her own shitty existence) knowing no bounds.
We need fresh meat.

I think the people who may see the front page are not the people who are regularly reading the forum.
I link straight to the forum, I very, very rarely see the front page. It may have a use as a landing page for first time visitors. But most forum participant are not those.
So advice from us probably has little value, or the front page has little value, or both. I dunno.

Me too.
I find the header with the date and the news flash a bit overkill, can keep the social media logos.
I would be more interested in a counter to see where people are logging in from (country), how many are online, etc...
Idem dito to for the latest forum posts at the bottom of the front page.
One goes straight to the news section or the forum page when looking for news or forum discussion.
The smaller fonts (apart from front page) is still readable.
I find it admirable that you take the effort and time to do so and wish it pays your bills.

Driving traffic to this site could come from posts on social media that link back to this forum. Not even sure that would work, people would just rather reply on the social media posts directly.
