Have you helped another expat? Poll.
Have you helped another expat? Poll.
How many have helped another expat in need whether it be with money, accommodation, or any other assistance while they've been down on their luck or experienced an unfortunate event or series of events? And would you do it again?

Why specify ‘expat’? Or will locals feature on a different poll?
Yeah, I’d help an expat. I’d also help a local. I’m not a self-centered prick.
There was a similar Facebook post a few year back on one of the expat pages. I commented something like I had helped people in the past and likely would again in the future. Within 30 minutes I had messages from 3 different strangers asking to borrow money.

I would only help an expat friend and have done numerous times. I have never helped a local other than beggars as most locals have their own support network called family.
k440, something to do when you're pissed.

I have,
Earning an income in a foreign country has it's limitations.
Sometimes things do not go as good as one might hope.
I've lent a helping hand when things are bad and people are struggling.
Truthfully I did not expect the money to be repaid,
However I've been surprised on several occasions when the favor has been returned.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Have helped lots of people over the years. Some have paid me back and then some, others what they owe, some make excuses and plenty more have short memories and thrown it back in my face.
A few of them post here as it happens. One didn't like this
On the other side, people have helped me out on occasion too, so I believe in helping out my fellow expat. There are of course the Jewsbury types who wouldn't even get a look in.

Too often. No more.

I've helped a few that were struggling. I've had some help back when times haven't been good. Not financial support for either.
"Goodness me! Now STD free..."
That"s unfortunate to hear.
I know what a dead fish smells like and when an expat has asked for assistance,
But in truth is just looking for an ATM - I have rejected the request.
I just put up with a few days of stalking and bad comments being made about me.
End of story.
AS for my Khmer in-laws
Several of them are masters in asking for a hand out with no intention of paying it back.
Whilst others would give me their last few dollars.
So, at the end of the day I'm still willing to assist, but I have become a bit more discerning in who I assist.

If I'm to be honest the current state of the poll is bit of a shock. You're actually not all a bunch of unsympathetic heartless self-serving assholes?
Who knew.

I’ve lent smaller amounts. I’ve also rejected “investing” in some projects.

There’s so many stories of this knocking about that it has made me a lot more wary of expats than I have been in other countries. It’s not really come up for me though, as I generally try to avoid looking too flash.
