I was shocked to learn that a 'volunteer' in an Aussie NGO makes $600 a month as a 'stipend'. She said that yearly salaries of 50-60K are not uncommon!
Obviously I am in the wrong profession. I should be sucking on the tit of tax-payers and corporate donors instead of teaching English.

I've heard of amount of $30 per month all the way up to $1200.Ed Grimely wrote:I was shocked to learn that a 'volunteer' in an Aussie NGO makes $600 a month as a 'stipend'. She said that yearly salaries of 50-60K are not uncommon!

The bottom end of that spectrum is pretty extreme though.
I dont see anything wrong with getting back up to $1500 a month for an NGO job. If you are going to come here and add value, then you should have enough money to comfortbaly support yourself and or family. $1500 isn't exactly a large sum of money.

I think you should stick to teaching English conversation in ... Vietnam.Ed Grimely wrote: Yet I can't find any VN stores
Don't believe anyone who tells you that Vietnamese consist of prostitutes.
Khmers were incompetant by comparison
Call me a racist but there are real differences in competancy levels..
There are 2 main orgs that Aussies volunteer thru - my figure may be a bit dated tho'. UN Volunteers get something like US $1200 a month. Australian Volunteers (AVIs) something like US $500 but maybe it's gone up to $600. Then there are various smaller orgs that pay different amounts, lesser or greater.

A good friend who works there told me the local NGO, LICAHDO, is paying a "webmaster" $2,400 a month to keep their website updated and running. This was a decision made by a Canadian/Khmer director. They were told about some PHP or ASP content management tools that could be implemented on the cheap and would allow them to manage the site themselves, but I guess they weren't interested in such trivial matters.
