PHNOM PENH (Khmer Times) – New Zealand says it will set up a business association in Cambodia to boost trade with the rapidly growing economy.
“The Asean Australia New Zealand Free Trade Agreement is now five years old and provides an excellent foundation to strengthen our trade relationship as Cambodia’s economy further develops, ”said NZ Ambassador Reuben Levermore, in a statement.
Mr. Levermore, based in Bangkok, and Foreign Minister Murray McCully are visiting Cambodia and Laos. They met Deputy Prime Minister Sok An yesterday to sign a deal to increase air traffic between NZ and Cambodia. The business association plan was announced during the visit.
"We will focus on G2G, education especially with regards to trades and technical skills, agriculture, tourism, food and beverage," said Dah Lee, head of the association. "Our NZ Trade Commission is operated out of Thailand for Cambodia so we will be working closely with the office there." Mr. Lee is the CEO of communication company Biggercomms.
NZ consultancy companies are active in Cambodia, working on projects in water supply, sanitation, resource management, civil engineering and other areas, according to the NZ foreign affairs and trade department. New Zealand's trade with Cambodia is worth just $10 million. Exports to Cambodia include paper, meat and fish, optical equipment and medical tools.
New Zealand imports mainly clothing, footwear and vehicles from the Kingdom.
NZ is also involved in the Cambodia Agribusiness Development Facility, which seeks to improve agribusiness, as well as providing support to APSARA, the Angkor tourism management body.
Last year, Cambodia received $4 million from New Zealand for the continued development of the Angkor complex.

When I die, I want to go peacefully like my grandfather did–in his sleep. Not yelling and screaming like the passengers in his car.

I guess that means Australian Centrelink are opening a Cambodian branch!
Of course it is difficult to denial the existence of the huge exodus of kiwis to Oz (as Piggy Muldoon the kiwi Prime Minister in the early 80's noted it was possibly a good thing as it raised the average IQ of both countries) - I thought the law changed back in 2001 to prevent kiwis from claiming most of the available benefits in Oz?

It did. The exodus has slowed down dramatically over the past few years, and many Kiwi's are returning to NZ.kiwikhmer wrote: I thought the law changed back in 2001 to prevent kiwis from claiming most of the available benefits in Oz?
