The Flicks is for sale - It's volunteer run?
I have a question...are they showing the films legally? I must admit I don’t even know what the legalities of showing films is, but surely you must have to pay for the rights to make a profit off a new release film? I know this is Cambodia where pretty much anything goes, but surely you can't get away with screening all the latest new release films (via illegal download or pirated copy) without paying something?
I know...stupid question

I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

What's the financial deal with the small independent film makers whose movies you show.

They are legally screened as far as I know, because it is a "film club" rather than a cinema.PSD_Kiwi wrote:I have a question...are they showing the films legally? Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

I really can not see what all the fuss is here. It seems to be normal Life Experience-Volunteering-Bed n Board set up.
The current owners, if that is the right word, took control and have developed a good sustainable social interest business model. I am sure they have put in many unpaid hours and now on passing it over to someone else, will see a return ( no one knows what they intend to do with the $65k btw, not that it is our business but they may have an intention to use it for another social purpose)
What else are they going to do, give it to..... well who ?
I think it is just a case of some folk with private sector minds, trying to apply that mind set to a social interest business model.
We can draw comprisions to an on-line forum. Someone invests money to get control and in time would like to see ROI. Ok, they aint going to become millionaires but at least make some profit.
Now, when they come to sell it, OH MY GOD! I was not paid for my contribution, nor was anyone else, do my words not have a redeemable value?
Of course not, and it is fine, I didn't get free beer or board, either btw
How the fu** is Zuckerberg worth $50 billion, Facebook is FREE, nothing is free !

Nothing but an opinionated tourist. The Pope spends more time in countries than I do ! It is also not my place to comment on a gentleman's dress. A real 23 minute wonder, that obviously knows little about ovens and cooking in Cambodia.
Thrice, and I still have the skidmarks to prove it!This Charming Man wrote:Has UKJ ever been to Cambodia or does he just live his life vicariously through this forum? His late night drunken bursts of outrage are entertaining though. They remind me of Lucky Lucan of old.
Even if I wasn't intending of visiting Cambodia again, I'd still use the forum. It's fantastic entertainment. DR GMB ( it's a 2nd hand whiteboard!) , NoJoke, Dags, Gavs investigations ( apologies for putting him next to those guys) , Helluva Good Blokes, heads sticking out of suitcases etc. Sometimes there's just too much crazy shit to read. I wish I'd bought it.
I'm very rarely drunk on the forum. I usually mention it if I am, and it's usually for medicinal purposes if I am drinking at home. Like the past 3 nights with excruciating toothache. Although I wouldn't say I was drunk. I use the forum as a break from poker, which I play 6 hours, most days.
I don't know why you are repeating your misunderstanding of the criticism. But if you want to work for me for a paragraph in your cv, then get yourself to Glasgow ( you pay the flight), and I'll stick you in the spare room and give you some cheap wine, and hire you as a bullshitter. " Improved the quality of life for expats" World class bullshit, sirRBD wrote:Aaaah - to repeat. Its a worthwhile cause for volunteers because they get to put it on their CV back home at minimum effort to themselves while here. It's got SFA to do with 'helping the locals'. And that, IS business.UKJ wrote:RBD wrote:The Flicks cinemas have tangibly improved the quality of life for (mostly foreign) residents in PP by providing access to largely independent films that otherwise would not be shown here:
Oh please. This is the " Business forum". Not the " Bullshit forum"
I could maybe get The Flicks being a worthwhile cause for volunteers if they helped the locals. But they have targeted expats and tourists. It's a money grab.
Huh? It's a lucrative business. But the owner doesn't pay the staff. And he has to recruit gullible youngsters. Why not hire locals?EdinWigan wrote: I think it is just a case of some folk with private sector minds, trying to apply that mind set to a social interest business model.
Anyway, credit where it's due. At least he seems to pay women the same rate as men. Nada
We should stop the debate as I don't want to give The Flicks a hard time. I know the practice is common in bars, from Spain to Snooky. I'll wait a bit, or until it's sold, and start a thread / poll, about the general model of using volunteers, without mentioning any particular businesses.

It's not a legal activity in relation to international copyright law to have a 'film club' and show movies to paying customers without a license.

Lucrative business and social interest business, wht do you not think these two business types can co exist?
A community interest company must, first and foremost be a lucrative business, how else can it be sustainable?

I actually found quite amusing but not surprising that kh440 daily crazyness is more entertainment that whatever can be locally sourced

Where did you get this " community interest company" horseshit? Was it in their sales pitch?EdinWigan wrote:UKJ wrote:Huh? It's a lucrative business. But the owner doesn't pay the staff. You are concocting a straw man argument. I don't have a problem that The Flicks is lucrative. Nor McDonalds or Starbucks. I do have a problem with Starbucks lying tax scams, or companies underpaying staff. You should know Brits criticize businesses who just pay the minimum wage, and not the living wage. I'm a Brit. I don't get why a handful of people are so astonished at my opinion, when it seems to be a widely held view. It's basic stuff mate. Make a lot of money - pay the staff. Google " Scrooge bosses" .
Cambodia
The study reveals that short-term volunteer projects can do more harm than good. Wealthy tourists prevent local workers from getting much-needed jobs, especially when they pay to volunteer

Oh! where to start...
How much corporation tax did Starbucks pay on UK profits last year or any year
I am not concocting jack shit, I am just stating that we do not know all the facts
Flicks, offers a gret experience to young people, on the 'see the World on a Shoestring' adventure, in return for a little relaxed work.
These people have built it, what would you rather they do? Give it to some lental eating hippy, who will run in into the ground in weeks. $65k shows, not everything but at least some sort of commitment.
What do they intend to do with the $65k ? maybe set something new up ? we just don't know...
Just because it doesn't fit into you box of understanding, doesn't mean it is wrong, just you need to look more and type less, until you do
UKJ, I enjoy your contibutions here but honet mate, there is some shit you need to read between beers!

Pay locals.
Pay anyone.
Stop exploiting young people.
I'll get back to the rest, It's a busy night at the tables.
Outstanding contribution re the free training.
What I disliked, was that they lied that they were losing money in the UK, despite the fact they were expanding. It was lies. It's all been covered. Take your head out the clouds, my favourite Wigan Witch, and join us realists.EdinWigan wrote: How much corporation tax did Starbucks pay on UK profits last year or any year?
