The Flicks is for sale - It's volunteer run?
It's volunteer run, despite being "very lucrative" . What does it cost the volunteers? I looked up workaway, and it's $29 to join. Can't find if the businesses charge the volunteers.
The Flicks Community Movie Houses is an highly established profitable movie house empire that has been operating for over 6 years now, with three venues in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The Flicks are volunteer-run and its volunteers occupy The Flicks 1 apartment, so any buyer can comfortably continue a volunteer-run setup, managed remotely in Phnom Penh (stocking, film and volunteer scheduling and supply, marketing).
The sale price of $65K includes all three venues, all our popular social-networking channels (Twitter, Facebook, mailinglist, websites) and the ownership of the very lucrative and very popular Phnom Penh International Film Festival and all its social-networking channels.
The sale price also includes a 6-month lease deposit on The Flicks 1 building, all its electronic and digital systems, projectors and necessary devices, air conditioners, kitchens and bar equipment, furniture etc.

This has actually been bothering me.
I'm pretty sure it's free to volunteer with them - they provide room (and perhaps board) in return for working there.
However, I vaguely recall when the current owner took over the operations (2011?), it was done via crowdfunding, for <$5000 (?), with the assumption/direct statement that it would remain a 'community owned' operation. The current owner profiting handsomely from the private sale of the flicks now seems a little inappropriate? Perhaps the original crowdfunders get a slice of the sale?
But perhaps I'm mis-remembering. Happy to be corrected about the circumstances of the current ownership.

Workaway.info is a world-wide volunteering network and its members pay a fee to apply to their desired volunteer locations all over the world. It's like Couchsurfing, but instead The Flicks offers all volunteers free accommodation and free drinks in return for their help at our 3 venues in town. Feel free to see our listing and see the feedback from previous volunteers: https://www.workaway.info/943192572685-en.html.UKJ wrote:What does it cost the volunteers? I personally raised over $7,500 with a crowdfunding campaign in 2011 for which people could DONATE or LOAN their support to take over The Flicks Festival Movie House from the Kiwi couple that was running it from 2009. However, whoever LOANED any money, got it back after 6 months. Whoever DONATED money, their funds were transfered to Kiva.org after 6 months, to continue to help others with micro-financing projects. That was the entire deal from the start of the crowdfunding campaign. However, I vaguely recall when the current owner took over the operations (2011?), it was done via crowdfunding, for <$5000 (?), with the assumption/direct statement that it would remain a 'community owned' operation.

Appreciate the clarification - I just remember the crowdfunding thing, not the details. Didn't mean to sound too skeptical
Many for-profit barang-run backpackers/bars are staffed by "volunteers" working for a bed or beer, so I don't see this is much different, except that volunteers can leave reviews on workaway.

As one of the "investors" who helped the current owner buy the Flicks, I can attest to a few facts to help clarify some of the speculative confusion in these posts:
- true to his word, the current owner paid each and every one of the "investors" who helped him secure the business on time and in full
- as an investor, I received two free passes to the Flicks for a limited time. That was the extent of the benefits extended to investors, discounting the good will that came from the trust in a man with honest intent and a good business model
- volunteers are unpaid at the Flicks, but receive free room in exchange for working the front desk for a few hours each day. My only regret is that I have not been able to find a way to get more of my friends and friends of friends on the list of volunteers to work at the Flicks. Having spoken to many of them over the years, most seem to have profited enormously from the experience, which in many cases allowed them to either visit a country they otherwise would not have been able to, or to extend their travels due to the free housing provided by the Flicks.
- my wife and I, and countless friends, travelers and people we have met, have benefited from the Flicks as a community facility that brings people together in a positive, fun and informative environment. We met people at the Flicks who became friends (including, in the spirit of full disclosure, the current owner), and I sincerely hope a new owner buys the business with the intent of continuing its operation in the spirit it is now run.
- "considerable profits?" Please. This is Cambodia, people. Unless they bring a lot of money, power or significant relationships to the table at the start, baraing don't make "considerable profits" in the Kingdom.

Free drinks were limited to less than a tray of beer a day. What's that worth? $3 retail?theflicks wrote:Workaway.info is a world-wide volunteering network and its members pay a fee to apply to their desired volunteer locations all over the world. No offence, but it sounds exploitative to me. The Flicks is aimed at paying expats and tourists, and makes enough profit to pay the staff. Basically, you are looking for slaves, so you can pocket the profits.

We need help with the daily running of these movie houses. Are you in for:
* Helping sell movie tickets, drinks, concession food and make popcorn
* Making sure everybody feels welcome, comfortable and is having a good time
* Keep the venue organized (the necessity of hygiene in this workplace is unquestionable)
* Watching a lot of movies and meeting many people!
(* Feed and massage the cats
And you only want top notch gofers
an awesome, confident, sparkling, SOCIAL and open-minded personality with a sense of humor and great appearance (it's a representative job!).
Personally, I'd be ashamed to exploit people like that, to build a business on free finance, , live off it, then sell it for $65k. Each to their own.
Isn't this how the island bungalows and most of PP/SR/SHV backpackers stay in business, and sell for profit?UKJ wrote:Free drinks were limited to less than a tray of beer a day. I've been going to the Aeon mall for big screen entertainment lately, those are probably the best, most modernly equipped cinemas currently in the country imo.

To compare volunteer backpackers who freely do some unpaid work in exchange for board and lodging to help them travel around the world with the millions of people who suffered - and continue to suffer - as real slaves is an insult to the latter.
Not cool.

Lol. That was a bit of a histrionic outburst. The term "wage slave" is used on a daily basis, throughout all media, without people going in to a short scolding about it being an insult to real slaves.alanclarke72 wrote:To compare volunteer backpackers who freely do some unpaid work in exchange for board and lodging to help them travel around the world with the millions of people who suffered - and continue to suffer - as real slaves is an insult to the latter.
