The Flicks is for sale - It's volunteer run?
If the flicks is registered as an NGO, then how can it be for sale?RBD wrote:The Flicks cinemas have tangibly improved the quality of life for (mostly foreign) residents in PP by providing access to largely independent films that otherwise would not be shown here:
-Is it an NGO? IMO no, but at least it has done something positive for the city - unlike many other organisations here that currently call themselves NGOs, and take the benefits the title allows while giving nothing in return;
- Why does it call itself an NGO? Presumably so it won't have to pay corporation tax on its activities;
- Is it wrong that it does not pay tax? Depends how you view its operations of course, but IMO it is as wrong as for the countless other non-performing NGOs and 1,000s of businesses in the country that do not comply with legislation either. And given the benefit it gives to the city I would rather see it in existence and not paying tax, than not existing because of an inability to comply with local business legislation (profitably, after the imposition of patent tax, profits tax, minimum tax, VAT, Khmer New Year Tax and whatever else the tax department deems fit);

But its not realy surprising, before this he sold dodgy Kilimanjaro tours through a Hong Kong company to evade Dutch tax.

Please understand that nowhere is stated that The Flicks is an NGO. It's a registered business at the Ministry of Commerce, licensed by the Ministry of Culture and approved by the Department of Cinema & Cultural Diffusion. And yes, The Flicks pays tax on rent, revenue and profits.
I still do. I don't have to pay any tax if I am not living in The Netherland by the way. It's just that any people booking it, don't have to pay 21% VAT either.before this he sold dodgy Kilimanjaro tours through a Hong Kong company to evade Dutch tax.

OK - my unintended mistake. Apologies for that - I was misinformed by someone who I thought knew what he was talking about. As ever, bad information passes more quickly than accurate information. In any case, I have been arguing on behalf of the Flicks for the good it does for the city (whether NGO or not) amongst a sea of negativity. Long may the Flicks continue.theflicks wrote:Please understand that nowhere is stated that The Flicks is an NGO. Sorry for leaving you out Miguelito. Sounds like you want labelled, so let's go for - " naive, sales pitch, selective review sucker, prone to ad hom attacks"

Thanks, I was feeling left out. That's the best you could come up with? Can you show me a negative review from a volunteer, please? There are 23 4 stars (excellent), and 2 are 3 star (very good) - which I made a point of quoting from as well. You seem on some vendetta against them for no reason, and are making unfair comparisons. I think that I'm taking a much more objective view of it all than yourself, imho.UKJ wrote:Sorry for leaving you out Miguelito. The exaggerations and spin keep coming.Miguelito wrote: You seem on some vendetta against them for no reason
It was me who posted.......................
It was you who just bumped the thread, and want to go over it all again. The thread would have been less than a page long, if I hand't been called a douche, drunk, never been to Cambodia, drunk, having a vendetta, drunk, and no doubt other insults I can't remember. All I said was that I thought a lucrative business should pay staff, preferably locals.UKJ wrote:
We should stop the debate as I don't want to give The Flicks a hard time. I know the practice is common in bars, from Spain to Snooky. I'll wait a bit, or until it's sold, and start a thread / poll, about the general model of using volunteers, without mentioning any particular businesses.
“Are the volunteers actually providing any benefits to the destination countries?” asks Watson.
More often than not, the answer is unquestionably no.

I'd be up for debating voluntourism later, with no mention of The Flicks. It does after all support the forum through advertising, I think. Start a thread any time you are ready.

Seriously? Before today, I last posted on here on Friday, 20 Nov. You even quoted me once again, and it had the same tone that you've had throughout this thread. I let it go, as I thought that I made my points articulately enough, and I understand that sometimes it is impossible to get through to certain people. I believed you had unfairly accused the flicks of certain things, I debated the point briefly, and decided that any reasonable reader would be able to take everything into consideration and reach a similar conclusion as I did, and that going down a rabbit path with you wasn't worthwhile.
Since my last post, you've posted here 10 additional times, insulting myself, a business, and other users. It seems that it is you that is unable to stop discussing this without having the last word. Your previous "last words" were:
As for me 'bumping' it, it was at the top of the Business Forum when I posted. So I literally did not even 'bump' it one spot up. You then labeled me as "naïve, sales pitch, selective review sucker, prone to ad hom attacks."UKJ wrote:I've already explained it's against 99% of peoples " box of understanding" , except a witch, a sock puppet cheerleader, and a not so charming man. Re-read what we have each written, and although I did once say that you were coming across as a douche (and that is one of the rare times on 440 that I even make a statement like that, but I will defend that it was not an "ad hom attack" as I didn't say you are a douche, just that you're acting like one now, which you're proving again, and it wasn't the basis of my argument), I tried to bring us back on track by looking at actual evidence, going back to the 25 positive reviews and zero negative reviews.
And now you're quoting random things, in bold (is that you yelling at me?), trying to divert it to a different discussion. Our discussion was about the volunteers themselves, and now you're changing it to benefiting the local country. And no, I'm not going to start a thread for you "any time when I'm ready" because, among many other reasons, you are continually showing that you are incapable of having a proper dialogue on it.
So why not let it go? It is you who is keeping it going, no question.Miguelito wrote:

Try to spin it all you want. It was an ad hom attack. The vendetta accusation is a baseless smear.Miguelito wrote:

I was talking to others. I don't remember insulting you or calling you names, although it would be perfectly acceptable after your ad hom attack.Miguelito wrote:

Ed is actually a witch. Ask him. He is up for any friendly banter. RBD , and yourself, do come across as Flicks cheerleaders. Maybe you are more the hatchet man.
I think The Charming Man called me a drunk who hasn't been to Cambodia, which was quite bizarre and unexpected. Ad hom attack imo.
Everybody knows Capital letters is "yelling" , bold is highlighting a point, or quote from an article. That was a quote from the article I posted a link to.You are scraping the barrel, trying to spin this from you being the aggressor.Miguelito wrote:

I am trying to divert from The Flicks, to voluntourism in general. I thought that was the correct thing to do. But obviously you won't let me.
So start your own thread about it?UKJ wrote: I am trying to divert from The Flicks, to voluntourism in general. I thought that was the correct thing to do. But obviously you won't let me.
The flicks have defended a range arguments against it. Trying to start a discussion on the efficacy and foibles of the voluntary sector seems a little OT.
I don't want to start a thread about it, but Mig seemed determined to talk about it. It was just my attempt at stopping him from keeping the thread going with his ad hom attacks. tbh I won't be interacting with him on the forum at all.epidemiks wrote:So start your own thread about it?UKJ wrote: I am trying to divert from The Flicks, to voluntourism in general. I don't know what OT is?

But you might ask your partner in Tanzania to invest in some decent gear before someone dies of hypothermia on your tours.
None but ourselves can free our mind.
Some nutjob has posted the ad for the Flicks sale on the Cambodia Scammers (2) FB page
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
