I was in a restaurant this weekend, and asked for another beer in Khmer. The young waitress then told me that she didn't speak Khmer, and I realized that she was Filipino.
I also posted some jobs on the Phnom Penh FB job forum, and most of the responses were from Filipinos, both men and women, willing to take $300 a month jobs. A friend that managers a restaurant says that when he posts on FB, he gets almost 90% of responses from Filipinos, for wait staff jobs starting at $250.
Has anyone employed Filipinos at this level here? I would imagine that they're harder working than the comparable Khmer, but does the fact that they don't speak Khmer cause issues? And how can they survive here on those wages? It's one thing for Cambodians, that live with family and rely upon a support structure with housing, food, etc - but the Filipinos wouldn't have that. And, has there been a significant increase in them?

What did I do now ?!!?
I have employed several Flippers over the years, mostly their salaries fell between Khmer levels and the Whities - although closer to the Khmer level by a noticeable margin.

They often send up to 80% of their salary home, I don't know how they survive. Many stay in shared apartments, I guess that helps. They tend to stay in teaching jobs longer than NS expats, not sure why, and the majority (women) teach kindergarten/ lower grades.Miguelito wrote: ↑Mon Jun 03, 2019 11:01 amHas anyone employed Filipinos at this level here? Worked at one school where the Academic Supervisor was getting money every month from people she had hired, exploiting 'utang na loob' or debt of gratitude.

Met some very decent, hard-working ones here. Only problem is the gossiping/office politics, ceaseless.

I believe you once advocated hiring Filipinos for some jobs over white people, by saying "Half the productivity at a quarter the cost"
