Would like RE Advice.............
Hi Folks, I'm about more than fed up with the treatment of foreigners in Thailand, and I am considering Phnom Penh. I was seriously considering CHiang Rai, Thailand apartments for less than 100 per month. Is there anything like that there? I own two properties in Arizona, and I'm considering relocation to PP with rental income and property management. I do realy well in the heat--it's going to be 111F here on Wednesday. I love street food. If i can just watch Bloomberg on TV I am fine with that. I enjoy city living, and I always like to see foxy girls going to work in the morning, and getting off in the afternoon, like in BKK. Would prefer to stay off the motorbikes--just simply too young to die in mid 40s. Looking for one good lady--so I really don't need to be close to the "entertainment district" but I like meeting other foreigners and doing some beers--like smoking weed a lot better, though. Don't like street dogs, don't really crave western food--and I love fish. Can someone clue me in on the housing scene? I owned a house with a thai partner in Chiangmai, so there may be similarities in the legal process, but unlike here in AZ--it may actually be smarter to rent. Thanks everyone in advance--I look forward to meeting you all.

I had heard ac was expensive. A lot of the apartments in BKK charge that much--after they mark it up--15 cents if you are more fortunate--12 from the power authority--if you are able to open the account. Living near a market is a good idea--especially for local fruits and veggies. Can you get by with less electric near the beach in Snookville?
Thanks, JM--hope you're having a good Monday.

60 per month for this apartment in ChiangRai--too difficult to score weed. Cheap, great food though.

Is it like Pattaya, by chance? I went there once.......and I've heard it's only gotten worse since the Russians started coming out of their cages. If not, what's the negatives on Snookville?jm wrote:You can get away with less air con in Snooky because the rainy season is quite rainy compared with PP. Flats cheaper too though you couldn't pay me to live there. Weather here in PP is quite mild for the region.

I wouldn't really know because I've barely been there, but mainly from what I've heard, Sihanoukville seems to have a lot of murders and robberies/ crazy ex-pats / unfettered bulldozers/ badly planned development/ sewage plumes/ annoying hawkers and drivers/ dreadlocked bongo-players/ toxic waste dumping/ rain and a not particularly great beach with shallow water and very few waves. Maybe I'm wrong.

Good thread, guys, and thanks to JM for imparting his local knowledge. I think I have much the same needs as the OP's.
Thighlander, I'm of the same opinion about Thailand. Yes, I could continue to live here in Bangkok where I have a wonderful group of friends and would miss them dearly should I move to Cambodia. I have many really good days in Thailand, but day to day I see too many pained expressions on Thai faces and not enough smiles. I've given significant time and money to visiting other towns and cities. I especially like Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Korat (sort of) and Ubon. In the end, I'm still not convinced I want to continue to live here. So I have quite a few trips to Phnom Penh planned already. I just feel better when I'm in Cambodia. That's all I will say for now. [Thread hijack ends]
As for Sihanoukville, good for a weekend visit, though I'm not a beach guy. The town is a hodgepodge, to be kind, of a few main streets, the big beach area and some nightlife areas. JM's term "butt ugly" works for me.
*Edit: How reliable is the electricity in PP? Are you guaranteed to experience the odd brownout or blackout? Thanks.

I agree that the smiles have disappeared quite a bit over the last few years. A lot fewer smiles in America nowadays, too. Could Thailand have actually peaked when home prices in the US did, in about 2007? I was never a fan of the beach towns in Thailand--just too fakey and a price on everyone's head--kind of what caused the demise of las vegas--they calculated how much they made off you as you stepped off the plane. Chiang Mai is super sweet, but a lot of farangs have worn out their welcomes there--as indicated by recent arrests of musicians, etc...

Try 1987 (maybe?), or even 1977 (possibly?). Is it Thailand that's changed so much or peoples perception of Thailand? In 2007 they were closing bars at midnight in Bangkok if i'm not mistaken. That wasn't much fun.Or was the one of the many election years where bars were closed in the run up to Xmas over long weekends? I don't remember 2007 being all that to be honest.Could Thailand have actually peaked when home prices in the US did, in about 2007?

While I only have my travel experience, I would agree. We are moving there in January 2011 (to Snooky) for 6 months to trail it. PP is the same same as many other filthy cities but that's kewl, the less people where I am the better and all I can say is, thank god it's not like Pattaya That aside, Chang Mai was the one place I really disliked.milo wrote:I got puzzled when someone say sihanoukville is known as murder and crazy town? hmm. i have been here for around 2 months.. town is nice but is small.. it is pretty much simple town.. nice beaches, If you love CITY LIFE, sihanoukville is not right town for ya
It's interesting though, if you read here you would not give Snooky a second look
