How did everyone find their house / apartment in Cambodia?
How did everyone find their house / apartment in Cambodia?
Did you find it before you came to Cambodia?
Walk the streets by yourself and fell upon a rental?
Use Art the homefinder?!

You come, you rent a guest house room, you look around, you find.

Ask your local motodop. This is how I found my place first time. If you drive around slowly, looking above you'll see "For rent" there are quite a few of them Or you can hire motodop and while driving around if you spot one of those signs you tell him to stop and make him make a call. That's it.

DMK, agreed, but you forgot the critical point: don't get a barang to call, get a Khmer you can trust. Avoid white skin tax.

Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.

I've had at least 6 rented apartments in my time here. Every time same procedure - get the wife or Khmer colleague to do the viewing and negotiating, and only after the deal is sealed to I show my whitey face to confirm or decline.
I came, I argued, I'm out

Hang out at Garage bar with a sad puppy dog look until someone adopts you. Worked for me
Rented the first one twelve years ago in a gated community with my team leader
Rented the second one after a local real estate guy showed me four or five in the price range/size/location I wanted. - stayed here or in other apartments owned by the same sisters for next five years
Leased next one behind a bar we set up and ran
Bought next one opposite Walkabout from a Khmer
Built the next one on top of the last one
Bought a house round the corner from a minor royal and filmstar

There is nothing more Australian than spending time in somebody else's country
So as a foreigner you can own an apartment in those old buildings? Are you still holding onto it? I was interested in those apartments, they are relatively cheap compare to other properties, but what I'm thinking of -those buildings might be old and probably need to be demolished in ten or twenty years and what's going to happen with the property rights?Bought next one opposite Walkabout from a Khmer

Maybe he doesn't know anyone yet, I found the first apartment and I paid 80 $ in 2004 or 2005, I think motodop got a small commision, but I don't think I was seriously overcharged. It was E1 at a corner of Mao Tse Toung- Kampuchea Krom intersection, a regular 4 by 16 or something like that with lao tua.DMK, agreed, but you forgot the critical point: don't get a barang to call, get a Khmer you can trust.
