May be of interest to some, so here are some
current prices I have paid whilst
building the Villa Gorilla ( love Warren
Zevon ). 1/ land - how long is a piece
of string? I'm barang, so up to Khmer wife
on this for ownership. If I didn't trust her
on bearing me four sons, then I'm fucked
on the land anyway! Bottom line - 7m * 14m
in Sen Sok, 5 kms north of Pochentong cost
US 20k, minus US 500 for prompt settlement.
Soft title, but I have no problem with that.
2/ Fill land - 23 * 5 cubic metre trucks and
bulldozer to raise land 1 metre. I grew up in
the tropics, and understand floods. US 30
per truckload of excellent quality fill. Bulldozer
free in fill price. 3/ Foundations - 60 * 4 metre
piles driven in clusters of 5 in 12 positions. Cost:
US 20 per metre, driven. OK - maybe too much
information, maybe I am boring you shitless, but
happy to share for anyone like me that likes this
country enough to live here!

Well, it was interesting to me. I suppose I was a little surprised to read how much the land cost. A plot about 46 feet x 23 feet costs $20K?
Carry on, I'm also interested...would be great if you could include some pictures too.
I'm also surprised at the cost for the size of the land, especially out at Sen Sok.

I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

7x14m for $20k does sound steep. Most of the plots I see are around $100 per square metre.
There are only 10 kinds of people in the world; those who understand binary and ...

The days of the quarter acre block only
exist in history in any modern city!
98 square metres is huge by Cambodian
standards, and I am very happy to
have found such a large block after
a couple of years searching. Surprising
what can be done when one uses
imagination and communication to
optimize the situation. Have a lot of
pictures I will start to share, as some
have asked. Electrician and plumber
coming tomorrow to quote on services.
Good wife that I have has just told me
what their quotes will be!

Have enjoyed a nice dinner with my family,
and now relaxing with a cleansing ale. To
address the opinions of some as to what land
is worth. In short, nothing if you have none!
On a moderate note, land here is valued and
appraised as the size of the rice paddy it once
was. Soft title prevailed, at the sangkat level, and
still does, since the destruction of land titles
under the Democratic Republic of Kampuchea. Given
that a rice paddy is the universal measure of land
size to a large proportion of the population, I think
I got a good deal. But I might have fucked up - I put
a bloody house on a damn good paddy! Don't worry, I'm
not. We are just off Street 2011 - someone in power is spending a lot of money out here on infrastructure.

At the pointy end of the house project
now. Regardless of what one pays for
land, quality building is possible if you
involve yourself in the process. Communication
is the key. Despite living here for four years,
my Khmer language skills are rudimentary at
best. The key to the success of this building
project has been my wife. She has handled the
English to Khmer language instructions to the
builder extremely competently. The builder tells
me today that we can move in just before New
Year. The builder has done an extraordinary job,
with no surprises for my budget. By the way, Ken
Svay - the builder got the staircases right!

Glad you got it all together.
Pictures would be great.
Is the building Khmer / Western - or a mix of both worlds ?

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Great thread, any updates OP?
The problem with the world is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?
