The light switch of my bathroom is broken. Not a big deal while I am alone, I can just leave the door open, but I would like to get it fixed anyway like for when I have visitors. It can't cost that much to change a light switch. When I mentioned it again, the landlord said he cannot find an electrician as all the ones he knows are working for big companies now. If it is true, it's a bit worrying: what if there is a bigger problem or if I finally decide to get an aircon? I guess upgrading the fuse box would be too difficult? Now using an electric kettle and a microwave will cause a power cut in the whole apartment.
Is the situation really that bad in PP or are electricians too lazy to travel very far? Is it really that difficult to change a light switch? I'm not at all practical person but I know which of a screwdriver I should hold and there are tutorials on the net and youtube.. I don't have a circuit or voltage tester though.
Need an electrician for small repair

Broken anything electric in a bathroom is unacceptable safety-wise. Your landlord should get it fixed.
If he says that all electricians now work for big companies, then why not call one of the big companies? At least then you will be getting a safe job done in a risky area.

Your landlord is playing you for a chump. He just doesn't want to pay to fix it.

It's difficult to get someone who will bother to come around for such a small job.claptrap1 wrote: Is the situation really that bad in PP or are electricians too lazy to travel very far?
Just get a new switch that's the same type and turn off the power. Take the old switch off noting where the wires go, then install the new one. A phase tester only costs about a dollar from any hardware place (it's a screwdriver with a bulb in it, when you put your finger on the top and touch the screwdriver end against a positive wire/contact the bulb will glow).I'm not at all practical person but I know which of a screwdriver I should hold and there are tutorials on the net and youtube.. Dude.... If the wires are already there and running hot, you just need to clamp the wires down and screw light switch fixture to the wall. Then snap plastic back on. Take plastic off with flathead screwdriver.
I did this last week. Not hard.

I hope he didn't try before you edited, otherwise all his lights are out and there is no one at home.DetroitMuscle wrote:Edit - TURN YOUR POWER OFF FIRST

Well I watched some YouTube videos and bought a voltage tester. I recon I could do it, just take a photo of the wires before detaching them (the main switch is in my apartment, not like before) and just copy the photo. The switch is outside so that's not a problem either... I mentioned I could attempt to do it myself but the landlady said NO because she is afraid of me getting hurt. I believe she is genuine, she helps me with lots of things and gives me tokens such as food she has made and rice, noodles, sugar etc. But I still believe it can't be that much more difficult than wiring a three-pin plug. The main concern is making a cut into the plaster as now there isn't any kind of "seam".

Just buy a new switch and change it.
