Hi All,
I've spent a fair bit of time in Cambodia, but always stayed in guesthouses, never rented, but I'd like to try. I'm at square one!
I'll describe what I'm looking for, most grateful to anyone who can address any or all of my concerns.
I'm just one person (and I'm gonna keep it that way). Basic- one room- is fine. But I need:
Quiet. I'm an insomniac, I have to have total quiet for sleeping. That's essential.
I like to be near the beach- Otres 2 particularly, not Serendipity or Otres 1- but in high season, the partiers go on 'till 5 am, fireworks included. So if I had to rent downtown to avoid that, so be it. Is there any alternative? I need access to Sumadera and pharmacies.
In the Philippines, I had an Apartelle, maybe you know about these. Set up like a motel, but with a guard, and the room included ceiling fan, A/C, microwave, full size fridge, cable TV, WiFi, sink & cupboards, en suite bathroom. Perfect for me.
I *don't* need A/C, I can leave the window open at night, obviously serious security is required in this situation.
I don't need hot water. Asian-style toilet is OK.
I do want a furnished place, don't want to buy a TV and the rest.
I want to rent by the month. My visa's up in Sept 2017, and who knows what the rules will be then? I might have to leave Cambodia. I'm retired, live off an inheritance, don't have a great deal of investment income.
Questions: How do I find a place? I don't speak or read Khmer. Is there a recommended website?
Utilities- I guess I'd be paying for cable (which cable company is best for a Westerner?) electric, and water. How do I know I'm not being ripped off?
How many months deposit is typical/fair?
Do I need to sign anything, e.g. a lease, in Khmer? I don't want to do that.
If you've rented, can you tell me about any problems you had, and how you solved them?
On Oct. 10, 2016, Jamie Lambo (thanks, Jamie) posted the following:
"In Sihanoukville there are plenty of places for around $100 that are very livable
my last apartment was 1 very big bedroom, separate kitchen, separate western bathroom, hot water, air-con, was just a block of 7 ground floor apartments with a big yard out front with fruit trees, all for $130 per month, i had another similar place for $120.If you dont care about hot water and aircon, there are many for $80 or less, if you dont mind more khmer standards (khmer toilet/no kitchen) $30/40"
That's more than I need, really, though it does sound very nice, and I do want a microwave and fridge.
WiFi would be a bonus, but I can buy a MiFi, use that, and still be paying less total than a Guesthouse.
I think that's it. Thanks for reading!
p.s. I'd like someone to come and do a good job of cleaning the place a couple of times a week. I don't mind to hire if it's not included. Price?
