Vehicle Safety Inspection
FYI,
I have just got the paperwork from the Ministry of Transport to renew my Vehicle Safety Inspection sticker (the green sticker y'all).
1. Cost was $30
2. Gratuity to inspection goon was $4
3. I was one month late, but managed to avoid a fine which was lucky.
4. The fine for being late on your renewal is 500 riel per day, so if you are 2 years late on your renewal, get your skates on.
5. The guy who did the inspection was surprisingly thorough - close attention paid to the condition of the brakes front and rear, suspension and even the brightness of the highbeams.
6. You dont need to make an appointment in advance (although it may help) - it can be arranged at the gate.
7. Bring a Khmer speaker with you if you dont speak enough Khmer. Duh.
Time taken: about 1 hour.

One thing to possibly make you feel better - prior to the check, I received several quotes about the size of the fine from supposed fixers.
They ranged from 500 riel to 2500 riel.
Now you know it is 500 riel, you can perform the Ruski hog-tie n' boltcut treatment upon any Khmer who tells you the fine is more than 500 riel.

I am genuinely interested in what constitutes a pass or a fail. My Hyundai was smoking blue, running on 3 cylinders, had a massive oil leak at the turbo, and a fairly bad trickle at the master cylinder. Passed no problem, no bribe asked for, nothing.
Other the other hand, it's very good to see that people actually can care about things in this country. I was starting to lose faith after the last guy to fix my brother's Land Rover put petrol soluble sealant on the fuel filter housing when it was "rebuilt".

My fella detected a leak in the power steering pump, which I will get fixed tomorrow. That wasnt a problem for him though.AK87 wrote:I am genuinely interested in what constitutes a pass or a fail. It seems to be: brakes, lights, suspension - in that order.
And I am starting to believe that the standards and protocols in the Cambodian Ministries (M.O.T., M.O.C., M.O.U.P. come to mind) are on the rise.

You gotta love this country.
Huge overloaded trucks travelling too fast at night on the wrong side of the road with no lights, no reflectors, Bozo the Drunken Clown driving it has no licence, ignores traffic lights, no problem.
But barang must pay close to $50 for a safety inspection.
Sublime.

ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.
I'd suggest bringing a Khmer speaker who also speaks English.Petrol Head wrote: 7. Bring a Khmer speaker with you if you dont speak enough Khmer. Duh.

why... they know what you're there for. hell, you could probably just hand them $50 and the keys and have them bring it back when it's done.cambod wrote:I'd suggest bringing a Khmer speaker who also speaks English.Petrol Head wrote: 7. Those who begin coercive elimination of dissent soon find themselves exterminating dissenters. Compulsory unification of opinion achieves only the unanimity of the graveyard.
