Can i get an International DL with my current Khmer license?
Can i get an International DL with my current Khmer license?
I moved here when i was 17 and naturally i learned to drive here and got my Cambodian driver license here.
Now i am going for a trip to the states in a month or so and would love to rent a car there, however to require me to have an Internation Drivers License..
Does anyone know if I can obtain an International Driver License in Cambodia with my Cambodian Drivers license?
Many thanks!

I hope the answer is NO. That's scary if you learned to drive HERE at 17, now heading to the States.fritspaap wrote:.... can obtain an International Driver License in Cambodia with my Cambodian Drivers license?
The cops WILL chase you in the States, so don't think you can just go around them like here.
I think the case with international driving licenses is that you need to pass a test relating to the country you're going to and also pass the international driving license requirements, I think, sorry if that's confusing. I just remember going from Japan to the U.S. I needed to take some test which allowed me to drive in the U.S. until I got my real license, should I have chosen.
I agree with Cambod though, Khmer drivers in other countries...

Cambodia didn't sign the convention. That's exactly why (most?) foreigners over here aren't allowed to use their IDP and have to convert their national one to a local one.
Is Cambodia 'uberhaupt' issuing IDPs?

What you mean (your first link doesn't work?)?Elekid wrote:Cambodia didn't sign the convention.
Cambodia is recognized in 1949 convention: http://www.aaa.com/vacation/idpapplc.html
I remember to ask here also before that where they do these IDL's in Kingdom?
Pardon my engrish, thanks you.
In my case the link was working after completing the security code (five*6=...) but you are completely right; Kampuchea is in the list (I did a search for Cambodia).raendi wrote:What you mean (your first link doesn't work?)?Elekid wrote:Cambodia didn't sign the convention.

But then my next question: why do I need a local driving license over here?
Is it because the actual 'Kingdom of Cambodia' didn't sign the agreement or is it just another scam by the police? Not important when they stop you for a bribe, but maybe more important in case of a serious accident (insurance),
Are (some) pre-UNTAC laws/conventions still valid or did they implement a complete new law afterwards?
The traffic law mentions:
ARTICLE 45: Except when there is a bilateral or multinational agreement or international convention recognized by two countries or more with Kingdom of Cambodia, legal immigrants who want to drive on the road of the Kingdom of Cambodia could obtain Cambodian license in two ways: 1. Applying in the examination for driving license like Cambodians 2. Exchanging their national driving licenses with the Cambodian one by submitting the application form to Ministry of Public Works and Transportation and shall complete the following criteria: a. Shall have passport and valid visa b. Shall have a valid driving license c. Shall have clear permanent address certified by authority d. Shall have a physical certificate and stayed in Cambodia at least six months e. In case the driving license is not in English or French, it shall be translated into English or French certified by their embassies, consuls or other competent institutions. The valid duration of driving license of foreigners exchanged to Cambodian one shall be in one year. The valid duration of driving license of the foreigners who passed the driving test would be in the same period as the Cambodian ones. And in the case that the foreigners’ driving license is invalid, the foreign drivers shall take the theoretical test and practical driving test. Foreign drivers holding driving license type C, D, and E shall not be able to exchange for those type, but shall be able to exchange for type A or B

In the UK you can drive for up to 12 months on a Cambodian Driver's licence but then you have to take the UK tests to get a UK licence.
Sorry don't know about the US

My sentiments exactly. This might be condescending but I hope you have a better head on your shoulders than 90% of the people here. Unless maybe you're driving in New York lol. But the etiquette of driving and rules here that no one even attempts to enforce and enforced over there.cambod wrote:I hope the answer is NO. Don't even think about rolling into the intersection if your light is red. Or swerve into the other oncoming lane to pass. The list goes on and on. If you remember ANYTHING about your driving classes/tests here please go back to those and follow them...

I would suggest that you go on line and type in Texas drivers license and down load the requirements for a drivers license. One wrong turn can cost you a couple of hundred dollars and a dui can land you in jail. They have very good roads and speeding can cost a couple of thousand dollars. Good luck!
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.
An IDL is simply a translation of your drivers license. Where I come from they are not even issued by a government agency but by the auto assoc. Cambodia is not a member state but a couple of years ago I obtained one off the net from a company that issued IDL's for non-member states. Was it legit? Probably not, did it work?100%. I got off with a warning because the officer either didn't know what to do or it would have been too much work.

I've driven 1000's of kilometers across the US, on multiple occasions and just used my Kiwi licence with no problems.
Most of these trips I had rental cars/RV's, just showed my NZ licence.

But if you've never driven in America before, only here, I expect you'll be in jail in under a day. The first time you enter an interstate going the wrong way because it was shorter to get to where you wanted, or try to pass someone who's already passing someone... it's a big list, but the US has very similar rules to the ACTUAL rules here... only they're very strictly enforced in America.

Those who begin coercive elimination of dissent soon find themselves exterminating dissenters. Compulsory unification of opinion achieves only the unanimity of the graveyard.
