And being an barang WITH a DL you weren't supposed to be there at all, you will be considered as sole responsibility for the crash, and charged a shit load of money (just like if you have no DL) to get out of it. The only real impact I've heard or seen it make here is a) how much the cops can get out of you if they manage to get you to stop, and b) if you can get insurance or not to help to pay for some of the previously mentioned shit loads of money.

^^^^^^ LoL, a lot of people say this, but NOBODY has come up with a single case of any Barang locked up for a long time because of any of this shit.Barang_doa_slae wrote:Over-read that one...cambod wrote:^ And when you guys say "no problems" do you mean you've had to show police your license and they accepted it, or do you mean you haven't even had to show it to police, therefore you actually have no idea if it's a problem or not?
Because I've been driving 5 years in Cambodia with no license and has "no problems."
Cambod, I really hope I didn't understand that line or that you were joking.
Driving a car in cambodia (and elswhere) with no valid license is the stupidest idea ever. In case you are involved into a crash that caused serious injuries and/or death, it won't matter who was responsible for the crash. Being the barang without DL, you weren't suppose to be there at all. Therefore you will be considered as sole responsible and charged accordingly with first degree murder or manslaughter attempt. As you can imagine the fastest track to enter a world of shit with prey sor inmates as new buddies...
Get your head out of your ass and see the reality as it is today and not in some "what if..." scenario...
Haha, I see you already responded....OrangeDragon wrote:And being an barang WITH a DL you weren't supposed to be there at all, you will be considered as sole responsibility for the crash, and charged a shit load of money (just like if you have no DL) to get out of it. I don't want the unfortunate fuckers I run over to know I have enough money to buy a license....

i think the rule is (at least as i was told) if you can get away... do. then hire a negotiator to handle it for you. apparently he, and what you have to pay using him, will be cheaper than what you have to pay pretty much every time.cambod wrote:Haha, I see you already responded....OrangeDragon wrote:And being an barang WITH a DL you weren't supposed to be there at all, you will be considered as sole responsibility for the crash, and charged a shit load of money (just like if you have no DL) to get out of it. Well the first and only reason i got an DL here is so i can get an insurance on my car, and if shits breaks out on the street, atleast u got your insurance who will help you out making you you pay as little as possible., also having a dashcam helps alot to show the insurance company afterwards.OrangeDragon wrote:And being an barang WITH a DL you weren't supposed to be there at all, you will be considered as sole responsibility for the crash, and charged a shit load of money (just like if you have no DL) to get out of it. And cambod, there was a western guy a few months back who accidently killed a kid. had to pay 10k +
10k. Meh.... You'd probably pay that for a lawyer and court costs to be found innocent in the States.fritspaap wrote:

And I'm sure he would have only paid $50 if he had a license, huh? Dream on, man.
Or would the family have had to pay for his damaged bike?
Again, that doesn't even have anything to do with having a licence or not, but somehow the peanut gallery thinks it does.
only reason for a foreigner here to get a local DL is to be able to get insurance for your vehicle.
therefor if you are not planning on getting any insurance for your vehicle, than dont worry about that license.
and that insurance can help allot in the case i mentioned.

^ That we can agree on. All of it. Every last drop.

yep. pretty much sums it up.
however...
if your license is about to expire in your home country, would getting one here then allow you to drive with it in said home country? i've been told it WILL allow you to rent a car with it... but not sure about actual driving laws if you get stopped there as you're not an actual foreign citizen.
