Is a 120w solar panel strong enough to run my fridge?
http://www.4wdaction.com.au/forum/viewt ... 4&t=136568
Guess what they are talking about the engel 40 liter refrigerator and 120w panel and in australia too . Maybe you could stop by and clue them in as to how to set up your magical system because they are saying that it probably wouldn't last for a weekend of camping and you used yours full time bouncing around on a boat without a tracker or any of that other expensive stuff for 15 year. amazing

From the second post. Let me guess; You are whizzo.
What the fuck is wrong with you? You keep on going on about this, taking this thread off topic and you called me a liar, you silly old cnut.by the end of the day the panel will have put more charge in the battery than the engel used.

now you think I'm whizzo, man you are thick , that post was in 2009 and no that panel won't put out more, except for some calculations from salesmen and yes you are lying when you say you had a 40 liter refrigerator that you used full time running of a 120w panel while living on a small sailboat.sorrynothingpersonal wrote:From the second post. I just don't like liars the solar industry is full of them taking advantage of others

I had to paraphrase the post because the "science" behind electric vehicles is not as straight forward or intuitive as what we would like. But as for the alternator, that's peak amperage and remember that most of the Scoopy's alternator power goes to running the scooter itself. Motorcycle batteries are also kept at a constant high level of charge, so they are not charged at 10 amps, but much less. Also remember that motorcycle batteries are fragile (some die in less than a year), but the death of a little 12v starter battery is less tragic than the demise of the pack powering your whole vehicle. To keep your batteries healthy, you want to adhere to those guidelines above. Believe me, I really don't like replacing the 8 cells on my golf cart (meaning 1 battery is a cell in an 8 battery pack, maybe my English is wrong) every year or two because I'm an impatient charger.sorrynothingpersonal wrote: I'm not sure of some of your figures either;
This Honda alternator on the Scoopy puts out 10 amps. A motorcycle CCA battery is a lot smaller than a 100 amp/hour battery.AE86 wrote:Max charge for a lead acid battery without frying it is 10% it's amp hour capacity.
I think the Prius is an amazing piece of technology, albeit a bit ugly. I have one (a 2009) alongside my Tundra (2006), and I do 63 mpg US on the Prius in L.A. traffic while the Tundra does 8 mpg so I most definitely save a lot of money on fuel in the US and even taking into account that one of the battery cells fails on it, I still have saved a lot of money in comparison. Personally I like it because it's comfortable for drive at stop and go speeds and can use it in the commuter lanes for free.sorrynothingpersonal wrote: Just out of interest, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on the Prius.
I also think though that the technology is a bit too much for "regular" people and that they're going to freak out when catastrophic things start occurring.

And this is the new iPhone solar charger. It also goes 120 kms on a single charge and max speed is 50 kph.

There was a video posted earlier of them being used as a coffee cart, but apart from that very little is known of their real life performance. They aren't meant to be driven around all day obviously. I did see delivery version on the highway near Russey Keo the other day. It managed to keep up in traffic, but was obviously slower than a conventional tuk tuk. I am pretty sure it doesn't have regenerative braking, which i assume is something they're working on.jackrossi wrote:Did anyone test those tucktucks on the road?
Ah, that explains your antipathy to the solar industry. Your butthurt doesn't negate the science though.oxbowlarry wrote:I just don't like liars the solar industry is full of them taking advantage of others
^^Regen braking is only (easily) done on an AC motor and a much more complex controller. Not to mention, the batteries need to be up to par to accept more currently flowing into them which lead acids are quite bad at. You'll never see a viable regen system on those vehicles.
It's the main reason (Honda uses Li batteries while Toyota uses Ni-mh) why the Accord Hybrid is topping 50 mpg US while the Camry hybrid lags behind at 30-35, despite being similarly proportioned.
I know it's easy to be enthusiastic about something you like, but honestly mate, these things just wont work and the science is what says so, not the disgruntled antagonist.

I love solar used it for many year didn't know how to run all the things you did with such a small panel.sorrynothingpersonal wrote:There was a video posted earlier of them being used as a coffee cart, but apart from that very little is known of their real life performance. I want to get one of their 20 passenger buses and put in an engel refrigerator and make a motor home to travel all over SEA No fuel to buy and no hotel bills either can't wait to take it all along the beautiful Vietnam coast.
They can go 120 klm before a charge that only takes 5 hours. It's perfect for sightseeing !!!!
What wonderful times we live in an I'm proud my adopted country is leading the charge
