This is the short version of the answer, and it is oversimplified.
Can you use 2 stroke oil as CRANKCASE oil in your 4 stroke? The answer is both YES and NO.
I know it works, because I've been doing it on my scooter for the past 4 months and 3,000 km. Some of you have seen me riding around with a 2 stroke cloud of smoke coming out the back of a 4 stroke scooter. I just disassembled it this morning and found no excessive wear over last inspection.
Before you try this though...THIS WILL NOT WORK ON A SEMI AUTOMATIC SCOOTER OR A MODERN CAR!!!
Why it "works":
Correct viscosity (approx SAE 25-30)
Correct temperature threshold
Correct lubricity properties
Does not foul plugs when consumed in engines
Why it doesn't work:
Clutch will be contaminated due to 2T additives.
In a modern car, the burnt oil would foul up the emissions and electric "running" equipment.
So, all I can say is that it works if you have automatic scooter with no catalyst or emissions equipment. I went 3,500 km done over 7 oil "changes" and 4 months and experienced no extra wear on the engine.
But honestly...just buy normal oil.
Poll: 2 stroke oil in 4 stroke crankcase. Can or Can not?
Okay so I have a Mini Scoopy 50cc water cooled automatic. I strongly suspect the rings have gone. Why - runs okay for a while (3-4 days) then will start to have flat sports on acceleration and eventually will cut out and turn over but not start. Changed the fuel filter, checked the fuel pump is operating and had the top off the carb and it looks clean. When I have pulled the plug it has a heavy deposit of black carbon with a viscose feel to it. I have also had my finger up the tail-pipe and the deposit is again a black carbon with a viscose feel. When I had the plug out last time I burnt the carbon off over the gas stove and gave it a light clean up with emery paper. This time out 4 days later the build up is there again. Can get it started again by cleaning up plug and shooting a load of WD40 in the cylinder and through the air intake. It blows a load of smoke on start-up (figure it is burning the built up oil deposits) but once the initial burst is gone no real sign of burning oil? I suspect it is probably going to run for a few days before I need to repeat the process.AE86 wrote:ANSWER POSTED HERE

Don't want to pay to have the rings done for a couple of reasons, one is I don't know anyone reliable to take it to as my regular guy who works on my other bikes (Dailims) won't touch it as he he says Ot Laor and Talih. I am starting to agree with him. Also it is not my regular ride but a staff bike.
Should I try the 2 Stroke oil solution? I have no idea if it has the emissions/catalytic equipment is still in place? What effect will the 2T additives have on the clutch?
Any opinions much appreciated.

Re: the clutch and emissions equipment, the Mini Scoopy (unless fuel injected) has no oxygen sensor or catalytic converter that can be contaminated by 2T oil, so it will "burn fine". The clutch on the Mini Scoopy is also separate from the crankcase, which means you're also fine on that front because it's a dry clutch.
The only problem I can see is having the crankcase ventilation system clog itself up from blowby at the rings, which was a huge problem with early Scoopy scooters and would kill the crankcase bearing quickly, but that problem wont go away with "normal" oil either.
As for the oil consumption however, it sounds like it's leaking through the head more than the piston rings as the smoke is on startup. Hard to tell without a leakdown test.
As for the 2T trick, give it a shot as there's nothing it can harm more than is already done. I've done it on an automatic scooter for months and still no problem besides that it burns a lot of oil to begin with. Haven't had a need to clean the plug once however.

People do it all the time, though the additives are different (more additives in higher spreads if I recall correctly). Better to have adequate oil level with two brands/oil weights than not enough. AK should weigh on on this of course, but I think people (myself included) overthink oil way too much. Lots of marketing hype really... People put diesel oil or dirt cheap stuff in their machines with no ill long-term effects. Others are more cautious and see it as cheap prevention. I personally believe that regular air filter cleaning is more important than oil choice in a place like Cambodia.
Is SAE 50 oil the norm in cambodia? you can use the 2T oil(I did this in my B&S lawnmower)Normally with worn engines you want heavier oil to reduce the oil burning. I think you should stick to the heavier oil, the engine will be a lot noisier with the thinner oil???
