Would like to get opinions from some of our mechanical minded 440 members.
Honda Today automatics 50cc (I think).
Are they any good?
Reliable?
Common issues?
What to look out for?
Thinking of getting one for my niece and at c. $500 for a 'new' one they seem like a good deal.
I'm thinking it could be a good option for a safe-ish first moto for a teenage girl. But I know crap all about Motos.
Happy to receive any comments.

Akira (AE86?) who used to post here was somewhat of an expert on smaller bikes. He rated them highly.

I think he liked them, but preferred the Cub. I do notice thay almost every single Honda Today smokes after a while. Probably blown rings or bad piston. Not sure why that would happen exactly, but something to note. The Cubs don't do that, however, they cost around double the cost of a Today, if not more. For $500 I don't think you can go wrong by buying what the locals affectionately call a Baby Duck.
The smoke is because they are 2 stroke not 4 stroke engines. I used to burn synthetic 2 stroke oil in my Vespa which cut the visible smoke down considerably with better lubrication but expensive.

Yes 4 stroke. 2T are a lot noisier and faster.
The only 2T nowadays are Aprilia.
You also don't need a helmet do you?

While they are new, the Honda Today is a reliable machine, and at $500 to $600 you can afford to throw them away after 2 years and buy another new one.
But I'm not qualified to give advice on motorbikes, so I'll just give the best advice to any purchaser in your situation can have,,,
[ 1 ] Buy a crash helmet before you buy the bike.
[ 2 ] Make sure your niece understands this rule ,,, so put it in writing and get her to thumb print it.
IF YOU ARE CAUGHT NOT WEARING YOUR HELMET YOU LOSE THE BIKE FOR ONE WEEK.
I think this is a better rule, than having to ask later at the funeral ,,, why she wasn't wearing a crash helmet .
Just ask my 16 year old girl,, why she does not have a moto now. Simple,,, No helmet worn, No motorbike. My rules aren't tough, but I'm fair.
