Now, usually my bike runs fine. As long as it is day... But I have some electricity problems during the night:
When I switch on my lights it will take maybe 15 to 20 minutes until they dim down. When I turn them of and switch them on a couple of minutes later, they are bright again for a few minutes. It looks like they consume more electicity than my running bike is providing. What could be the cause (I don't want to run to the mechanic three times and change this and that until I find the reason!)
Some background: I figured myself that there could be three possibly things going on:
1. There is a broken wire and it's grounding, therefore consuming massive amounts of my battery.
2. A problem with the stator.
3. A problem with my battery.
So I undressed my bike and checked every cable and isolated it new, if necessary. The problem is continuing. The battery isn't that old, I bought it maybe 5 months ago, but after I had some wires grounding, it could have affected my battery.
Now I went to my mech today and he did a voltage check on the battery and with high revs the battery didn't exceed 13,7 V. He told me I need a new rec/reg, but I'm not sure if the symptoms are right and it's 20 bucks.
Anybody got experience with that? Thank you for letting me know!
Bike electric problems, what could be the cause?

You have been told you need a new rectifier or a regulator to fix your problem and it will cost 20 bucks. And you ask guys who have never set eyes on your bike for an opinion on what the issue is?
Seriously dude what is your problem?
It's a fucking electrical problem on a bike. It could be fucking anything.
Pay the twenty dollars and find out if it works.
Jeez.

Yes, well, the problem never stops. I have the feeling that the alternator doesn't supply the system with enough Watt. I mean, I run the bike without lights for a couple km. After that I'm able to use the electric starter and the lights are bright. So now I switch on the lights (approsimately 30 W headlight and aroung 10 W rear light) and after a few minutes (if I previosly didn't use much electricity longer, if I just run a few hundred meters without light just a moment) the lights get dim plus next time the electric starter doesn't work. Battery flat...epidemiks wrote:Have you tried turning it off and on again?
The turn it on/off thing was a joke, but yes, I had precisely the same problem with my old Sangyang. Replacing the rec/regulator fixed the issue. Do it ASAP before you melt your electrical system.
Raw stator output is much more than 13.7 volts, and if it's not tamed to 12vdc before it hits your charging circuit and electrics, you're liable to have your small gauge wires melt and your battery life severely reduced.
Don't know what your bike is, but 20 bucks for a new rec/reg sounds reasonable.

Thank you very much! I gonna go tomorrow.
Well, reasonable is a thing when you don't earn more than $200 bucks a month. I need a job, seriously !
I drive an old Suzuki Smash Revo 2008. Bought it and a couple of weeks later it broke down. I payed my mechanic 150 bucks to overhaul it and fix all damaged parts. Since then it runs fine, just the electrical issue.

UPDATE:
I got a new rec/reg installed yesterday. Well, it didn't look new though. Running the bike with lights on the Volts on the battery increased slightly to 14.2 (previously 13.5). When I drove last night for almost an hour I was supplied with light all the time, but the last 10 minutes I realized the lights dimming with less rev. Also my electric starter wouldn't work today - battery flat !
So I guess we found the problem, just if anyone has a similar problem or wants to know.
Luckily, thinking ahead, I told the mechanic yesterday only to try the exchanged part and that he needs to take it back and refund my money if the problem wouldn't be resolved. So I'm going back to my mechanic today and tell him to change the rec/reg to a better one that gives me at least 14.5V during running lights! I'll let you know as soon I know more about it.

Ok, spent all day at the mechanic. We took the covers away and tried to figure the wires out, the previous owner did a great khmer job cutting randomly wires, add cables and isolate them khmer style with plastic bags. And now the new discovery: The origin of the problem lies in the alternator. That's why previous "mechanics" lay a new cable running from the battery to the headlights, which supplies the lights with enough power to be bright, but takes more power from the battery than the broken alternator can provide. My mechanic was desperated after almost two hours trying to figure the cable spaghetti out. Anyway, in the end he put it together the same way it was and told me he gonna inform me as soon as he knows how much a new alternator is.
And didn't charge me anything! I bought him a coke though.

Electrical problems are a bitch and most mechanics don't even want to fuck with it after a bike has been khmerized in the wire department. Tracing the problem through wires is time consuming and frustrating as fuck.
Battery, ALT, then.... Fuses. My dirtbike lost full electric on the trail last week. We had a full on electrician riding with us. Spent 1vgood hour under the sun trying to eliminate problems. Finally check the 2, 10A fuses. One is burned out. Sometimes, it's simple and small.
I didn't read everything, but have you checked your fuses and also, is your spark plug actually creating a spark? ( unhitch it and hold the end to engine case (ground yourself) and look in darkness (garage or somewhere) too see if it's making spark.

Anyone who doesn't like Capitalism is a pathetic loser. God bless the USA and no place else.
