Why The Hell Most Barangs Don't Wear Helmets?
Why The Hell Most Barangs Don't Wear Helmets?
I just had a small discussion with my wife: Why most barangs won't wear helmets?
I think in opposite to Cambodians probably arount 90 to 95 % do have driving licenses in their home countries but at least half of them like to ride without helmets. They should know better!
My wife said: They probably think they're perfect motocycle riders!
I said: I think that of myself, too! And I probably wouldn't wear a helmet if there weren't other vehicles. But I'm afraid of four things here:
1. Bikes shooting out small side roads.
2. Cars coming from behind honking and sticking 1 m behind you.
3. Cars in opposite direction overtaking, filling out all lanes, ignoring you.
4. Black bikes, dark clothes, no lights in night.
Plus: Most of the barangs I meet (who drive without helmets) complain about the crazy driving style of the Khmers. In my eyes they should be a better example or don't complain. I don't get it...

I'd say the vast majority of westerners don't have a licence to ride any motos.
In the UK you have to sit a test to ride any sized bike or you ride around on "L" plates on a 50cc for eternity!
It's a lot stricter then when I were a lad.
I'm guessing the answer is because they can.

I think most do wear helmets.
Shite, chinese or thai brainbuckets mainly, but still helmets.
I've not conducted any empirical research into this, but I watched my customers for 4.5 years come and go to my bar and maybe 4 of every 5 would wear helmets.
I probably wear a helmet 9 out of every ten times I use a motorcycle, always on the main roads and in PP - on red dirt roads in the countryside near my house I might leave it off for short hops on a moped.
Helmets are good. But if people don't want to wear them that's up to them. No need for all the fucking hand wringing.
Feel free to quote this post if I ever happen to meet my end through not wearing a helmet.

Maybe it's better in PP than down here in Snooky. I see plenty of speeding barangs without helmets. Well, of course they can do, I just don't understand why. In the last week there were two major accidents here with barangs and no helmets. One of them death now. And I drive daily 2 times out to Otres, where it seems to be worse: Higher speeds and less helmets. And the roads are so bad now after the rain season. Plenty of holes... A friend of mine got an operation today: Big hole, leg got smashed by his bike, broken leg, well the helmet didn't help the leg though .

Siahnoukville. Haven't been there for three years now, but I remember noticing a lot of really dangerous driving pasty folk on scooters.
Flip flops, singlets, sunburn, fake Ray-bans and no helmets sounds about right for the seaside.

From my perspective. Of all the idiots who don't wear helmets, foreigners are well represented.
So not most barangs, but a higher proportion of barangs over Khmer.
Not scientific at all, just perspective - although it could well be positive reinforcement in practise.

Just came back from Kampot and saw lots of foreigners not wearing helmets. Two camps really: jaded expat (and there are a lot of strange expats down there) or newbie hipster who obviously has never sat on a bike before.

Cops around TTP have been pulling over motos with passengers that don't have helmets.
I don't drive, I sit behind Morticia. If I have to get a helmet, I would want a stahlhelm.
Anyway, I decided instead to get Morticia a car. I told her she had to wear a uniform when she drove it...miniskirt, gloves...boots....faptastic.
