How much/where to obtain a wheelchair motorbike?
I'm looking for a motorbike modified to accommodate those who are disabled from the waist down. Here are a number of related questions:
How much should I expect to pay for a finished product?
Is it cheaper to buy your own motorcycle and have it modified on your own volition?
Can any automatic bike be modified?
Where would I get it modified?

Most of the disabled 3 wheel bikes I remember seeing have been adapted from Honda Chaly's or Dreams, which are semi-auto scooters.diss-ability wrote:

I get the sinking feeling I'll be given the run around on price and quality if I go direct to a local mechanic. Is there anyone on the forum I could pm to just get a feel for what I should expect in the way of cost and parts?

It's funny, whilst I've seen a fair few of these about I have never been aware of anyone actually doing the modifications.
I wonder if there is a place which specialises in it or if mechanics just take them on as little projects.
I wouldn't have thought it would be massively expensive to convert.
I'd suggest just approaching a few local mechanics to see if they are interested in taking it on and compare their prices.

The Dream conversions are very bouncy and usually have fixed rear axles so you'd struggle to do a turn!
There's a bloke in SHV who has one. I'll ask him where he got his done. Although he's not physically disabled just in his head.
I've also seen a Khmer woman who looks like she's got no use of her legs with one. She shoots around like a Isle of Man TT sidecar racer!

There is a place on 271 about 100 meters south of the entrance to wat Somsak Kosal, it's what looks like a metal workshop on the west side of the street, ask around the people near by will know it. It costs between $250 and $350 if I remember correctly.
It can be done on auto's but they don't recommend it.

The ones I see are a bit more sophisticated, they have well fitted mudguards and extended pedals etc depending on the disability.jackrossi wrote:one khmer war vet near my home had his watever scooter modified for 100$

Do you have a photo of the place or of the sign?starkmonster wrote:There is a place on 271 about 100 meters south of the entrance to wat Somsak Kosal, it's what looks like a metal workshop on the west side of the street, ask around the people near by will know it. I asked around and the stated price for one was $800 for a complete product but I don't know where they are sold for this price.
Would it be preferable to buy an old Daelim or something rugged and then approach a mechanic to do the conversion? I don't suppose it has to be a fantastic bike because most of the rear end is coming apart anyway.
How about a factory made trike? There's this on Facebook, and I've seen some of importers around 182 with some trikes.
I build these , around $1000 to convert a bike . They have a proper differential , so they do go round corners .
The Khmer built ones I have seen have a solid back axle , great in a straight line , try to go round a corner , and
they ain't playing .
