WTB New Laptop?
WTB New Laptop?
My lappy has just given up the ghost after repeated shutdowns- probably the HD or motherboard.
I'll send it off for repairs as it's only 3 years old, but need a replacement for the interim or as a backup because usually once these things start going wrong, more stuff will, especially if 'repaired' by KH hands.
What are the good shops these days? Is Chantra still good?
Looking for new, not second hand (unless somebody on here has a bargain??). Price range $3-500.
My previous experiences of semi-major purchases have been haphazard, so any recommendations for a reasonably honest seller appreciated.

Not a great experience with Chantra but they were the only shop with stock that time. I asked to add an SSD into the new laptop. When delivered I had two boxes and I could do it myself...
I'd use GoldOne however not all item listed online are available. Give them a call to be sure. Otherwise maybe v-tech.
2nd hand I usually buy from Vantech after checking prices from similar models on khmer24.

The area around Kampuchea Krom Blvd is loaded with computer shops.

I have a Sony Vaio 4 x 64. About 5 years old. Has served me well, but I have recently got a new one and am off as soon as I can, so don't want to lug 2. Great 2nd lappy (it has been my only). $150 it's yours, bag, mouse, speakers. PM if interested
Chantra mainly sell second hand refurbs, but if you don't ask, they won't tell. They do have a few new ones though. About three or four from the list of 60 or more. Seemed to be basic models that run new Windows only. Premium prices compared to Thailand or Vietnam. None of the new computers contain an official guarantee, so although supposedly new, some sort of Khmer fuckery involved.
Circa 2001, an Australian friend and NGO volunteer was helping set up a GIS for the Min. of Rural Development to map minefields, pre and post demining, and redistribute them to actual poor people. I asked her about using copied software, and she said No One she knew that really worked with computers ever paid for programs themselves.
Is this still true?
When Cambodian shops load laptops with 'free' apps and systems, they all constantly strive to communicate with the mother cloud, and the regular warning and error messages annoy the hell out of me.
I lack the skill to keep full functionality and stop the annoyance, can the true geeks amongst you heal this problem?

Yes if you let them install software it is most likely pirated and god knows what other kind of stuff they add. New laptops are sold with or without Windows license and most shops will clearly label this e.g. Windows Home vs DOS. Not sure what the amount of pirated software is within companies over here.
Sub $500 this was the best deal I could find: (there are cheaper Acer and ASUS but they lack ram and cpu power)
AMD Ryzen™ 3 5300U / Windows Home

Intel i3 / No Windows

What about Linux. Works perfect. Much more stable and not those stupid self-thinking (IE pro-Microsoft) tiles .......

Could you explain the symptoms when you have the problem on your laptop? Sometimes, something that seems like a major problem, it turns out to be a simple fix.
To answer your question about what is a good laptop out there in the market, I would say that all laptops are close to the same in terms of longevity. It's not like how it was back in the early 2000's where certain components in a laptop or desktop computer are inferior to their competitors.
Today, it's all about performance. Yours is a three year old. That tells me it's week equipped to be running for a few more years without feeling like it's a dinosaur.
Gotta find out if it's a hardware or software problem first and foremost. If you have screenshots or pictures of what the error message looks like, maybe I can help.

It seems to be the motherboard, it was sent to somewhere to repair, but not holding breath for a few weeks. I bought a shitty ASUS Celeron- quite expensive for what it is, but new and couldn't wait on a PP delivery/risk involved in that.
Cracked Windows, sigh.

Is there a problem with Linux when it comes to certain software, though?
Tech stuff, etc.
Even if it's just the odd software that is buggy on it, that odd one might be the one i need, and there's always support for third party software with Windows?

Linux typically runs well even on really old devices, obviously if performance especially memory is limited that will make things unpleasant regardless of OS, general stuff is free like browsers or media players work fine. The limitations is first comersial software Lightroom etc is not offered, and secondly hardware support. Always google if your model is well supported it really sucks if wifi or BT foesnt come back after suspending so you have to reboot all the time. Sometimes it doesn’t support low power mood that will hurt battery run time quite a bitspitthedog wrote: ↑Sat Dec 11, 2021 6:51 pmIs there a problem with Linux when it comes to certain software, though?
