Google Voice
Google Voice
Do any of you use Google Voice here to send and receive calls from the US? Does it cost money when you make or receive a call from the US? I think you need another US phone number to set it up. Guess you could use a friend in America to receive the sms message from Google then send it to you . Thanks

I try to avoid giving Google anything of mine. It definitely won’t be getting my voice, any details of phone numbers or content of calls.

I thought my answer was clear enough. I am anti Goggle. If you ask yourself why, I reckon most internet search results using the search words why are people anti Google would be reason enough.

I used to agree with you but the battle of the free net was lost. It doesn’t matter if you give it to them or not, they have it through the services that you use and the contacts you interact with.
I’ve surrendered. Fuck it.

I hear you but, as with COVID, I’m determined not to be the one who directly ‘infects’ those I interact with if I can help it.

Me too, but sometimes I remember a very trenchant post you wrote about privacy. I had said something like, fuck it, nobody wants to kill me, whats the problem, and you said, not now, no, but cultures and governments change.....it made me think hard.
Many years ago, I had to write a strategy paper advising Google how to move forward - not for real, obviously, it was in an exam. I said they should drop the Don't Do Evil bullshit and get on and dominate the world. I was marked down quite severely for a poor grasp of corporate foresight and futures!
Anyway, I have definitely surrendered. Too much effort even to worry about location services. If I ever go back to my true love, crime, I'll just have to give up phone and Internet completely. But then I've just written that here, to echo in the ether for eternity.
Ah well.
It’s a good point that I have no recollection of making. On the other hand if they start killing people based on their digital footprint they would probably include those who have none just to be sure.RobW wrote: ↑Sun Jul 30, 2023 4:56 pmMe too, but sometimes I remember a very trenchant post you wrote about privacy. That’s funny, Google actually did remove “don’t do evil” in 2018 and re-added it sometime before 2020 when the removal made a big hoo-ha.

By the way, GCHQ and the NSA already have the keys.
