Windows XP Password cracking
Got a problem with an Acer Aspire One netbook - can't get past the Windows XP password login (it was Stuart's and his girl doesn't know the password).
So how do I circumvent this problem and either hack in or delete the password? Nb. It doesn't have a CD drive, and we didn't find any documentation or back-up disks.

I came, I argued, I'm out

The easiest / most graceful way of getting in there is by booting off a Linux Live CD and resetting. Here's how.

I'm a total idiot when it comes to Windows! Although I can usually sort stuff out.
This applies to everyone though: Before selling/giving away used computers or storage media, ensure that it is properly wiped of all information. Just deleting the files isn't enough.
http://www.dban.org is an excellent tool which boots of a CD/USB stick and then securely wipes all disks in the system. ALWAYS run this before selling a computer.

Does this truly wipe all recoverable data from the disk though? I was under the impression that some data will also be able to be recovered.Agrippa wrote:I'm a total idiot when it comes to Windows! Although I can usually sort stuff out.

The truly paranoid, or important, would be better off putting in a new hard drive $90 and smashing the old one.

Drilling holes into a hard drive is a good method of making the data unrecoverable.
There was a huge story a few years ago when the South Australian Government updated all of their computers and auctioned the old ones off. Some were only formatted making the data easily recoverable but most were left intact. Personal information of probably every resident was leaked.
