Help with internet
I just found an apartment (fingers crossed). One of the men in the building said he would run a splitter from his internet connection and set me up that way at a cost of $30/month.
That doesn't seem like a great deal because I was under the impression that internet costs about that per month if you aren't sharing with a neighbor.
How much would it cost (money and hassle) for me to set up an internet connection directly with an ISP? How long does it usually take?

fair enough... i paid attention to 2/3rds of your post, thinking that was relevant. Clearly not.giblet wrote:I just found an apartment (fingers crossed). One of the men in the building said he would run a splitter from his internet connection and set me up that way at a cost of $30/month.

Apparently the stock answer on here to your question in the last 1/3rd of your post, is .... "look on the internet".... Not my answer, just the answer I got. Hope you have more luck.

I do that with my landlord. I pay him 50% every month. We're with Metfone (or is it Mfone?) $35 per month. You could do it yourself - just call 'em out. Not sure if you pay a deposit. Hey, I'm not much help either!!giblet wrote:I just found an apartment (fingers crossed). I'm not sure what the one-off start up costs are these days, but with Ezecom, once you're online you can get a steady as a rock ADSL connection for about $65pm. That's 512 kps weekdays 7pm - 7am and weekends Saturday midday to Monday 7am and other times 128kps. Plus you pay $5.50pm to Camintel for the line rental. I'd suggest avoiding the WIMAX deal as it can be frustratingly patchy especially given the way new buildings are sprouting up.How much would it cost (money and hassle) for me to set up an internet connection directly with an ISP? I think it took four or five days for them to install.

thanks for this info.
I pay $33 a month total for 128k UNLIMITED-24/7 through CamNet.
I also had to pay a one-time $15 installation fee only because I didn't even have a phone line or anything coming into my apartment.
The installation process was a COMPLETE NIGHTMARE!!! After dealing with about 8 different techs for 4 days straight who didnt seem to know their ass from elbows, things are going smooth. They set up 2 appointments per day for 4 days, and showed up for less than half of them, and then would show up other times when we DIDNT have an appointment... Sometimes they would show up (late) just to inform me that they couldnt do anything that day?!!?? The 'phone-line' techs blamed it on the 'modem techs' and vice-versa. My room looks like a kitten had a field day with a ball of phoneline-yarn.
I was also supposed to pay a deposit, which they somehow forgot to collect. I've since called them 2 different times (once about 3 weeks after the install and once about 5 weeks after) and nobody seems to be able to look up my bill, and they just suggest I wait around for one (which by my calculations is many weeks late by now).
The internet works great, but i'm just a lil nervous of the actual company. I would drop them and go through another company, but I might be suicidal if I have to jump through that many hoops again.
I also needed to provide a 'lease' or something since I'm not the owner of the building here, which was another headache for another 2000+ word post......
