shitty smart signal
shitty smart signal
Hi all,
I currently use the Smart 20G for $25 internet package. In the past, it has been reasonably reliable, however, since the merger with Hello, the signal has been utterly bizarre...
For instance, after connecting , the signal may show 5 bars and register 98% ,however, the up and download figures sit at 0.00kbs / 0.00kbs.
Other times, there are no signal bars and 0% strength and the download is coming in at up to 2Mbs...
Most of the time it just sits at 0.00 / 0.00 endlessly. Even now if i check the info it shows 0% signal and the figures are at zero / zero...but i'm able to connect and use the internet no problem right now, for the first time in over 24hrs, and it will drop out whenever and thats that for however long until the system decides to show mercy.
A friend who lives 2 blocks over has the same set up and has no problems with it at all. Works fine all the time.
I'm changing companies so please no answers advising that.
I just want to know if anyone else out there has been having the same shitty service and why this is happening at my house, but not at a mates place 500m away.
Cheers

I use the same package as you - $25 for 20GB on my laptop 3g USB dongle. The service constantly drops and the speeds vary wildly from day-to-day.
However yesterday it just refused to connect and reported 'no network found' and other shit like that. It is now 9pm and it still refuses to connect (even though I have 13gb left).
Now here is the bizarre part!
I took the SMART /HELLO 3g sim out of my girlfriend's phone and put it into my dongle. Now I can connect to the network no problems!?!?!!?!
Needless to say they won't answer the phones. So it seems that some sim cards just cut out randomly, while others connect. Fucking sick of this. I left Metfone for this company and now I don't think there is any company that can offer a reliable/cost effective 3g service. I move around too much to get a fixed line.
Combine this with the daily water / power outages and WELCOME TO CAMBODIA!
Getting really sick of living here now........

'End of story'. I reckon that's the straightest answer to expect. I have thought of trying another provider (Digi etc), but I have been here long enough to realize I am just going to waste my time again.
IF.......Anybody here is using a reliable 3G USB dongle with a modicum of success then I (and the OP I'm sure) would love to hear about it.
However I reckon I will be sprouting grey hairs before that materializes.

my metfone dongle has never once failed me, worked well in 3 different parts of town (steung meanchey, out north of the airport in BFE, and now in russian market) as well as working solidly in siem reap, s'ville, and out in the svay rieng province in a few areas (3g in province capital, edge speeds out at the family village). has also worked fine on the bus to siem reap for as long as my battery lasted bouncing from 3g to edge.Karong wrote:'End of story'. Well I had no complaints with metfucks service (very reliable connection and steady speeds) until they capped your monthly allowance to 4gb a MONTH! I used 4gb in about one week and went to pay their extortionate $12 for another 4gb and they flatly refused to do it, quoting 'it was against company policy'. Fantastic business model I thought; customers are waving money in their face and they don't want itOrangeDragon wrote:my metfone dongle has never once failed me, worked well in 3 different parts of town (steung meanchey, out north of the airport in BFE, and now in russian market) as well as working solidly in siem reap, s'ville, and out in the svay rieng province in a few areas (3g in province capital, edge speeds out at the family village). has also worked fine on the bus to siem reap for as long as my battery lasted bouncing from 3g to edge.Karong wrote:'End of story'. I like watching the odd youtube clip and download the occasional movie/cd so I switched to hello/smart (oh the irony) for their 20GB for $25 package. It has fluctuating speeds and disconnects a lot, but no enough to really piss me off, but now after using only 6GB they say I need to top up more money to reactivate it (7 days after paying $25). I shouldn't of sent the GF down to do it as she actually did this and topped up another $2. When I connected I got 15 minutes online reading a BBC article and then got told all my credit was gone.
Sooooo it's off to the smart shop right now to raise some hell - I'm in the mood for an argument anyway so this should be fun.
I will report back on the results of this thrilling episode later.

the metfone thing is silly. you just "resubscribe" by sending the SMS code again when you run out and it automatically re-ups your service.
i use real internet at home mostly, using the dongle for travel and power outages.

I have been using Hello with an iPhone as modem and it has been working well here in the Olympic area, even after the merger with Smart. I think it depends on where you are located, if you are at the riverside you are probably competing with a lot of tourists for bandwidth, and Hello/Smart does not offer proper capacity there as opposed to Cellcard which is more expensive though. As for DIGI they have been more reliable again here after the end of Khmer new year. Using them for more than a year, I have been mostly happy with their service and not to forget the price of $12 for a 1mb, unlimited/5mb nightime line.
oh yeah!! the hunt for good internet.
i was going to trawl the various companies but after the posts here i see that is pointy stick and a large ball of poo territory.
hrump...
anyone tried that Mega company?

if a wired solution is cool, digi is pretty awesome.

You guys are lucky to have a range of bad options. I think I have two options here.
Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.
