PTC Computer Technologies
PTC Computer Technologies
Bought a new computer off this company a month or two ago with a one year warranty. After a month or so I started getting a lot of messages about pirated Windows 7 needing activation etc. Then the screen background went black.
Took it back and they said with pirated software (which they supplied in the sale) of Windows 7 it does this when Windows updates automatically. They can reset and disable updates but this seems a bit of a poor fix to me.
What are my options here? They want to charge $160 for a licenced Windows 7 edition with disk. I have been to the Microsoft site and they can supply an activation key for the current (pirated) software for $ 106.
Do PTC have any obligations here? Thanks for any comments in advance.

When I bought mine, they offered to put a pirated version of Windows on there for me, and said they would do an unlimited number of reinstalls if I had any problems within the first month (maybe 2).Ghostdog wrote:

Since I have a conscience, just kidding, since the last thing I want to be running is a pirated operating system from a techy in Cambodia that was last updated years ago when the disk they use to install it was created and that can't be updated, I took the advice from our beloved K440 members and downloaded Windows 7 myself from a legit source and activated it myself.
Now it gets all the updates and shows "activated", and I know (assume?) that it's a legit copy with a safe activator in use.
No issues whatsoever.
If you can find that old thread you can find the legit download links....
They have installed pirated windows for free (which you agreed to) and now you think that what they are offering is a poor fix?Ghostdog wrote:After a month or so I started getting a lot of messages about pirated Windows 7 needing activation etc.

What are you expecting?
Sounds like they are being kind by actually offering any fix.
You misunderstand me. I am not complaining, I am just looking at the alternatives (links etc) for what is a poor fix ie have to continually do it.bauerin wrote:They have installed pirated windows for free (which you agreed to) and now you think that what they are offering is a poor fix?Ghostdog wrote:After a month or so I started getting a lot of messages about pirated Windows 7 needing activation etc.

I bought my laptop from them a year ago, and got a licensed windows - never had any issues at all. Get licensed OS - my advice (It doesn't matter where you get it - from PTC or from Microsoft imho).

It's also a very steep learning curve for some poor bastard coming in from Windows.WonkoTheSane wrote:Haven't you technophobes heard of Linux? It's free, you cheap fuck.
I have to admit that Windows does things either
a) in a better GUI or
b) most people are so used to Windows that Linux is difficult or
c) Linux is designed to show off geeks' abilities rather than offer an alternative for the general populace unless they like challenges.
What does amaze me is why people still use PTC when it is common knowledge that most other shops in Phnom Penh are way cheaper, offer the same or better service, and can also offer you the choice of pirated/licensed software. Duh!
Ghostdog, get thee hence to V-Tech on Kampuchea Krom, end of problem. Many on here will vouch for them. You know how to use google, right?

Depend what you want to do.vladimir wrote:

If you just go on the net, watch video, do some office work than the learning curve is close to zero.
it more about becoming familiar with the linux software than anything else.
Advantages are :
- almost no virus
- you can access to the data on the window when running linux (the reverse not being true)
- free
- very stable, especially when compare to a crack version of windows.
I would recommend to any one to install a dual boot system. Easy fast and good advantages.

No idea why vlad has a problem with Linux - don't need to get the spanners out and get under the hood, just use it. Ubuntu.

Long time no see, anyway.
