Buying laptop - in Cambodia or abroad?
I'm currently on vacation in Germany and in need of a new laptop (old one died recently).
I'm trying to figure out if I should take a new one back from here (advantages would be more models on offer and no worries regarding 'dodgyness' of a product), or if I should wait until I get back to PP (cheaper? Lots of free software and OS for example).
Anyone made experience here? I've never purchased one in Cambodia but hear many people saying they found cheap hardware instead of the listed built in (I can imagine that's some "everyone tries to rip you off" bullshit though).
My budget would be up to 800-900$ roughly.
Any advise would be much appreciated. Cheers!

If you are fluent in German, I would buy it there. Because the OS and everything else in the laptop will probably be in German. Plus it's probably cheaper there, they have Walmart. Right? If you only know English then I would buy it in Cambodia. My wife's PC is all in Chinese,I can't do anything with it. Just my thoughts, a lot of people here know more about PCs than me.

Re the price, I couldn't find the models that were recommended here on either the PTC or Anana websites, so I'm not really sure where to get the better deal.
Can you claim the GST/VAT ? tax back at the airport like we do in OZ. Which in theory makes it ?? % cheaper.
Every empty bottle is my private crystal ball
Where I gaze into the future
And find nothing there at all.

It depends on the deal. Laptops are not really cheap in Cambodia and the available models are very few. It will be cheaper around Christmas, both here and Germany.
Make up your mind of what you want and what you're willing to pay for it before deciding where to get it. $800-900 should get you pretty good hw regardless of buying it here or in Europe. You probably want to stay away from the Acer's and other brands with that cheap plastic feel to it.

Like how to change the language, for example?zerotwosixty wrote:My wife's PC is all in Chinese,I can't do anything with it. Just my thoughts, a lot of people here know more about PCs than me.

Cheaper in Cambodia, and you find can recent models at ktop in soraya market , or on st 184 in the electronics shop next to the French cultural centre. Your budget gets you a fast touch screen model.
Buy in Cambodia. VAT is only 6%. Germany? 21% Even better: Bangkok. More competition = lower prices + VAT refund airport (7%).
No VAT refund for you at the airport in Germany.....

Thanks for the advise all. Yep, I've also heard that Bangkok is a good option - shame that I only have a 1h stopover on my way back
Does Bangkok not present problems with Thai or multilingual keyboards and operating systems, perhaps Low Yat plaza in Kuala Lumpur might be better?Kachang wrote:Even better: Bangkok.
How easy is it to get a VAT refund when leaving Bangkok?Kachang wrote:Even better: Bangkok. . . . . + VAT refund airport (7%).

When I gave my wife this PC(Sony Vaio) it had Windows Vista in English. It broke so many times (cooling fan 4 times, disc drive 1 time) the local PC repair guys loaded a Chinese version of windows 7 so they could understand how to operate it.qq wrote:It depends on the deal. No, they all have the same keyboard as us. Mobile phones too. The OS is all in Chinese. Sorry I can't explain how it works.
The phones can all be changed to English by pushing a button. Of course you need to read Chinese or be lucky to find the right button. With a PC you have to buy or borrow an English version of Windows and load it in. One time she accidentally changed her IPOD to Russian, It took me many days of fiddling to change it back to Chinese.
