VPN's (Virtual Private Networks)
VPN's (Virtual Private Networks)
I've used VPN's for years especially as I'm often on public WiFi in Starbucks (like now) and wouldn't dream of going online without the VPN on.
I'm not sure if there are any VPN servers in Cambodia but I know there are in Vietnam and Thailand.
Is anyone using a VPN in Asia and how is the speed compared to using a public WiFi or normal mobile data?
For those who don't know what a VPN is think of it as a link between your device and the internet. You can surf anonymously - and even choose the country you "reside" in, although your connection will slow if you're in PP and connect to a server in Cardiff, California or Canberra- and change your IP address (your devices signature) and whilst on WiFi and using phone data (2G, 3G) it's impossible for a snooper to get access to your device.
(You still need a signal on your phone or dongle on your laptop. This doesn't replace that but uses the network)
This also allows you to access any web address. Even blocked ones. (Unless the country is blocking that particular VPN. Which is highly unlikely. Even if they do you just select a new one) If it's a US only site you just log into a US VPN server and it (the blocked website) thinks you're in the US.
There's many VPN providers around but I've got a paid service from http://www.hidemyass.com. $76 for 12 months. There's lots of providers so don't just look at the one I've mentioned.
I've got it installed on my iPhone (APP, which installs the stuff), which was pretty simple, and my MacBook, but it's available for most phones and PC's.
If you use your PC for work then I'm sure your company will be more than happy for you to use one as it encrypts all data. It's impossible for anyone to get your data.
If you're a bit of a technophobe then don't worry. Installing is pretty simple.
(I'm am not affiliated with hidemyass on any shape or form. I wish. )

Tried to get a free account with them and this was the link i got to verify my email addr
Email Address Verification Link: http://www.khmer440.com/whmcs1/z.auth_e ... f9.1345543
which resulted in Page Not Found!
Any explanation
Possibly a referral link, as in he gets money for introducing people.
Possibly. Might not be.

If one is in to downloading, Pure VPN (Hong Kong) cooperate (At least in their TOS) in war on Piracy etc so one could have issues there. They are also a pain to do business with, with their very intrusive verification process.MaybeMove2PP wrote:I use PureVPN here. Depending on what I'm doing dictates where I connect which dictates the speeds I see.
Otherwise I think they have a good reputation for speed and tech support.
Boleh VPN (Malaysia) and AIR VPN (Italy) have the best Privacy Reputations around in terms of logging policies etc if you trust the opinions of guys at places like Wilders Security and the owners of both are very involved on the forums there and in Privacy Advocacy in general
At the end of the day you can never be sure what your VPN provider is doing with your data --- but at least it helps if they are saying the right things.

I would never trust a VPN for privacy, but they are great for security. That said, Private Internet Access, BTGuard, and iVPN all take your privacy more seriously than compdtitors. I think they all accept bitcoin too. I have used all in Asia before and found no problems, but PIA is my favorite. Their nearest server is Hong Kong.

Care to elaborate? I ask because I had no such intrusion when subscribing.Rain Dog wrote:...

This is from their TOS:MaybeMove2PP wrote:Care to elaborate? I ask because I had no such intrusion when subscribing.Rain Dog wrote:...

"In order to serve our legitimate customers, like yourself, with a VPN network that is free from troubles/downtime we have employed a stringent Anti-Fraud Policy. If our anti-fraud system rates your transaction as a 'potential risk', you will be requested to go through a verification process. The mere purpose of asking for such verification is the fact that we need to keep fraudsters away and because we believe you are a genuine customer you will have no issues in choosing from one of the options offered to you e.g. Send us a blank email from non-free email address, Send us any NON-CONFIDENTIAL Document etc."
I attempted to sign up for their 3 day trial before buying. For reasons unknown to me my transaction was flagged as high risk. My best guess is that some vendors flag all Southeast Asian Credit Cards as high risk. Or possibly it is because my Credit Card Issuing Bank and Mailing address is from a country other than Cambodia but I was Signing up from a Cambodian (Or perhaps my ISP was showing a Vietnam) IP. Anyway I got flagged, and then about an hour later I got an email saying I needed to provide them a PAID email address (no yahoo, hotmail, gmail) address or a Scanned copy of a Drivers license or a scanned document such as a utility bill with my name and address on that.
I know they get my particulars from the CC but this still felt WAY to intrusive, and I could not be arsed to be running around to find a scanner to email hem a copy of a document.
Way over the top IMHO --- so I moved on to another vendor without any hassles.
I can say that I was not charged. There are a lot of complaints on the internet about this process and quite a few complain about being charged and never getting a refund.
You can see some complaints here if you scroll down to the comments:

Agree with the Private Internet Access recommendation, I have been using it for a couple of years.MekongMouse wrote:I would never trust a VPN for privacy, but they are great for security. Not so certain about the Hong Kong server (access point), I normally go via Amsterdam which provides a port number for seeding back torrents.

There are access points in HK & Amsterdam; I am looking at them now. I don't use either often though, as I visit a lot of sites where it is convenient to have a US IP, so I usually just go with something on the west coast.BillyB wrote:Agree with the Private Internet Access recommendation, I have been using it for a couple of years.MekongMouse wrote:I would never trust a VPN for privacy, but they are great for security. Hide my ass is actually a UK company and they supplied details of login data to the USA authorities after a naughty chap was doing some hacking. A they are UK based I guess they are under different rules.
Then again I would imagine that US based VPN's are also under strict legislation.
Still. If you are not doing anything too bad (like hacking the FBI website) you should be ok.
