VPN Use In Cambodia
VPN Use In Cambodia
My questions are:
Does anyone use a VPN here in a private (home) setting?
How bad is the overall speed loss when you do?
Any recommendations for a 'paid for', but not 'over the top' VPN provider?
Thank you.

I use PIA when required for privacy or dodging geo-restrictions or just to get a stable apparent IP address. The effect on speed depends on which exit server is used. I'm on the cheapest OpenNet ADSL in PP near the airport. A ping to either Google DNS takes about 90mS on average without the VPN active. Using the Hong Kong exit point the ping time is unaffected. With either of the UK exit points the ping time increases to about 300mS. Regular browsing, Skype or streaming are not noticeably adversely affected regardless of exit point (I've not actually tried most of them).
I've been using PIA for nearly a year and not really had any problems with it. I checked some review sites a few days ago to see if there was something cheaper/better and decided to stick with what I've got. At $39.95 for a year it seems pretty good value.

I use the Avast SafeZone site and the yearly subscription comes with their own VPN for a small add on cost, I don't notice any reduction in speed.
I believe the 'free' VPN's are dubious (nothing is free) and your surfing info or whatever could be compromised. I'm not really savy on these things, it's just what I've read.
If you use an anti virus program see if they have their own VPN, much safer than the free or cheap.

Never mind.

Surfeasy VPN works well for me, i pay a couple of quid a month, cheaper for an annual subscription but i wanted to test it for a few months first.
You can get mobile/tablet plans which are cheaper and quick and easy to set up.
Speed slows a little but still good enough for videocalls.

I may need to look into VPN again. A couple of years ago it was worthless for streaming anything to Cambodia, could not hold a stable connection long enough to watch a 20 minute program. Fine for basic surfing, otherwise worthless.

A few years ago I looked into it. I seem to remember that, back then, downloading torrents through a VPN was probihited.
How is that with IPA, I checked their website, but found no answer to that question.

Well, you can say what you want about VPN’s. They are all connected to an account.
And free ones aren’t always the worst. I’d suggest Cyber Ghost 5. Downside is it kicks off after 3 hours, but automatically reconnects. And usually takes a minute to connect when you first start it. Quite a few countries to choose from, too. The thing with the free ones, are that you can just wipe it off your computer, and then load it again and you get a new account. No account directly connecting you, as you are anonymous completely.
Of course, I’m paranoid, so that’s just me.

Wrong on all points. You should learn from scoffer and not give people advice on subjects you know nothing about.batshitcrazyweirdo wrote:The thing with the free ones, are that you can just wipe it off your computer, and then load it again and you get a new account. Sure, it can be traced back to your IP, unless you don't pay for the IP and there is more than one person on your IP. Over 150 on mine, and I damn sure don't pay for it.
So you are wrong. It works just like I said. Been doing it for years with different VPN's. Over 10 years. Trust me, I am anonymous. Scobienz even banned somebody from my IP address, and it was not me!
So until you can prove what you are saying, besides telling me I am wrong, then I'll stick with being anonymous for now, and like I have been for many years.

There is not a single VPN protocol that was designed for anonymity. There is no ground breaking evidence to reveal. Anonymity was never the scope. People started using VPNs as a panic reaction when serious crackdowns began on piracy. But that was to hide their IP address in filesharing networks, not to be anonymous.
scobienz doesn't come from a technical background so I wouldn't hold it too high that he banned the wrong person. You seem to be of the impression that IP addresses are the only way to identify network connected devices. That makes the whole conversation meaningless. It's like explaining colours to somebody blind to them. I don't have the patience for that. You are wrong on every point and that's that.
They usually work wonders for evading geo restrictions like for streaming sites as mentioned by Felger, or confusing non-technical website owners. Beyond that VPNs fall flat.
