New laptop recommendations
Anyone spotted decent quality laptop that would recommend?
I don't have time to trawl around computer shops as I'd much rather spend that time trawling around drinking beer.
Something in the 450-750 dollar range with nice shiny bits and lovely smell to it.
Can you tell I know a lot about computers yet?
Mostly word processing but like to.watch videos on it. Starts up reasonably fast. So there's the lengthy list of prerequisites.

Can find you one tomorrow but will add $50 lazy bastard fee.
You want to watch movies so bigger screen is better? 15.5", 17"? How big? A bigger screen is better for viewing and gets an easier to use/larger keyboard but is not so easy when your traveling.
Do you need a lot of disk space for movies or will you just buy an external hdd if you need more space? (A 2TB Dell external hdd costs about $120.)

I just bought an Asus Zenbook for $690 here in PP that I'm very happy with. Slimmer than a MacBook Air, fanless CPU and SSD drive so it's completely silent, boots Linux in under six seconds and has an eight hour battery life.
If you want something that's portable, good looking but doesn't need to run resource intensive apps (video editing, games etc) then I would look into this.

what size is the screen on the Asus?

Asus Zenbook sounds good.
That would be an i5 processor then?
Double core?
PTC or where?

Just don't buy Acer their unsplit touchpads stink.
Also get one with at least a 2-split or preferably a 3-split touchpad, whatever make you buy.

The quoted price will NOT get you an I5 processor I think, I'm pretty sure it's the UX305CA mentioned above and it has a Core M processor, it's slower but uses less power than the I5 / I7. Not that you will notice the slower speed during normal use.... But besides the slower processor this laptop seems to have all the nice items, including an IPS screen. For the price quoted it comes without Windows too I think.Just Robbed wrote:Asus Zenbook sounds good.

Yes, one of the best parts about that Zenbook is that it has no moving parts whatsoever, making it a pretty solid & silent machine.starkmonster wrote:Yep it's the Core M processor, which is fanless hence the silent operation. The touchpad hasn't been an issue for me.
And about the touchpad - I couldn't care less. It's mostly about the driver, not so much the hardware, and I hardly use it. A mouse is so much more convenient for me.

Good to hear. I've been looking at laptops for the past two or three months, and the one that keeps popping back in my sights is the Zenbook. Good prices in Phnom Penh and it fits all my requirements. I want a laptop that is LIGHT (sub 1.5KG). I'd be curious how the battery fares long-term. I'm eyeing a Zenbook with 256-500SSD. The finish is quite nice on these, better than most other brands. HP is coming out with the "Spectre" which might fit the bill, but it's almost double the price. I figure a mid-range or high-range Zenbook might just be what I need. How big and heavy is the charger on yours? What colour did you get? Do you know the code? Something like UX305?starkmonster wrote:I just bought an Asus Zenbook for $690 here in PP that I'm very happy with. I have had my Zenbook for about a year now - the best laptop I have ever used.
